“Hm?” I gently urged Lilith when I noticed her hesitating.
But she only shook her head before speaking with some reluctance. “I just wanted to ask if it’s possible to turn over everything we have on Brandon to the police in advance. I’m worried that if this drags out too long, the Scotts will find a loophole and manage to get him out.”

Although I sensed that wasn’t what she truly wanted to say, I abided by my principle–if she didn’t want to tell me, I wouldn’t push.
So I gave a short nod. “Callum and I are already thinking the same. Even if you hadn’t brought it up, I planned to discuss it with you.”
Malice flickered in my eyes.
Since he was already behind bars, there was no reason he should ever come out again.
Let him rot there.
“Really?” Her eyes brightened, making me smile despite myself.
“Of course. I wouldn’t joke about something like this.”
“Then I’m glad we’re on the same page. I was worried about suddenly changing the plan.”
I circled the coffee table and lowered myself onto the sofa opposite her.
“Why would you worry about that? You’re the one who suffered most in this matter. Isn’t it only natural that we follow your wishes?”
“You mean that?” Her gaze locked on me, searching.
I nodded without hesitation. “Yes.”
She leaned forward, her tone sharper, probing. “Then what if I wanted to let him off–would you still agree?”
My jaw tightened instantly.

Slowly, I leaned forward as well, chill creeping into my voice. “That is the only exception, Elise. I will never allow someone who hurt you to walk away scot–free.”
I knew the call earlier had been from her parents. And from the way it had soured her mood, they must have been pleading on the Scotts‘ behalf.
But whether she was serious or just testing me, my answer was the same: letting Brandon go was impossible.
He had to pay for what he did. That was undebatable.
Our eyes locked, neither yielding.
Normally, I’d give in, but not today.
I needed her to see how resolute I was, and she… clearly had her own reasons too.
At last, she relented first, turning away with a soft chuckle.
“How ironic,” she murmured.
The words were light, but I caught the unmistakable bitterness beneath them.
It unsettled me more than I cared to admit. So against my better judgment, I nearly asked what she meant by saying that-
–but at that moment, my phone buzzed.
Callum.
I picked up.
Before I could even greet him, his flat voice cut in. “You haven’t talked to HQ about opening the new branch here, have you?”
My fingers twitched around the phone.
Rising to my feet, I covered the receiver and said quickly to Lilith, “Sorry, I need to take this call.”
She gave a small nod, and I quickly walked out, stepping onto the patio.
“Who told you that?” I asked quietly.
He knew me too well. That my question was as good as admitting it.

“So it’s true?” His voice shot up. “Are you playing with me, Dean?”
A dull throb started behind my temples.
I pinched the bridge of my nose and sighed. “Tell me how you found out first.”

“How else?” His voice was tight with restrained fury. “After the board meeting, anyone with ties to Astral Studios tried to confirm the news of the new branch. They didn’t expect to hear ‘there’s no such thing‘ in reply though. I didn’t either.”
He let out a harsh laugh. “Now they’re insisting you’re an imposter. I barely calmed them down, but Dean–you’d better give me a reason before I lose it.”
“First things first, I’m sorry,” I said calmly. “Indeed, I haven’t discussed this with HQ yet, but Callum–you know me better than anyone. I never say things I’m unsure of. Since I declared I’d open a branch here, I will. I don’t joke about things like this.”
There was a pause, his breathing was still ragged but clearly easing already. “…And the game prototype you spoke about–was that a lie too?”
I arched a brow. “Of course not. There is a prototype. But it’s rudimentary compared to what I envisioned–an all–action, male–centric dev team handled it after all. Naturally, it’s lacking.”
I allowed myself a faint smile. “Still, the structure is solid enough. With adjustments and modifications here and there, it’ll work.”
Callum gave a humorless chuckle.
“You really enjoy playing with people’s hearts. Anyway, when will you bring this to your HQ properly?”
I raked a hand through my hair. “I’d meant to arrange a video conference since I spoke to you about it, but things kept piling up. So it got delayed.”
“At this point, a video conference won’t cut it,” Callum said flatly, his tone unimpressed. “You need to show your face, Dean. Talk to them in person. You know that too.”
The throb in my temples sharpened.
Of course I knew. But-
I glanced back inside. Lilith was still there.
The thought of leaving her for God–knows–how–long made my chest constrict with something

“I’ll come down to Raven Tower now,” I said at last. “We’ll talk more there.”
