Rebirth Snatching Back My Stolen Luck novel Chapter 95

Chapter 95

LILITH

For the next three days, the headlines were dominated by Brandon and the Scottsand not in a good way.

The evidence we submitted sealed Brandon’s fate. Between the attempted assault and his trail of financial crimes, the indictment came swiftly.

SCT Group’s stock prices plummeted almost overnight, especially after auditors swarmed their headquarters. His family was far too busy scrambling to save their empire to even attempt pulling him out of the mess.

Claire wasn’t spared either. Investigators traced a portion of Brandon’s embezzled funds to a Swiss account under her name. Combined with her role in luring me to that hotel room, she was dragged down with him, her complicity impossible to deny.

Even so, my mother tried to intervene.

She called relentlessly, begging me to plead for leniency on Claire’s behalf. When I ignored her, she went furthershowing up at The Haven Residences, demanding to see me.

I wasn’t surprised. They were bound to find me eventually. It was only a matter of when and if they wanted to.

But I had neither the patience nor the mood to deal with her.

Fortunately, Dean was there that day. Whatever he said when he stepped out to meet her left her leaving with her head low and her lips pressed tight.

I tried asking later, but he only smiled faintly, refusing to say a word. From that smile alone, I knew I wouldn’t get an answer, so I threw it to the back of my mind.

When Julian and Marissa heard of it, they called soon afternot only to apologize on her behalf but to reassure me. Don’t mind her, they said.

Do whatever you want. We’re on your side, no matter what. If you ever need help with the followup, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Whether or not I’d lean on them, hearing those words warmed me more than anything.

And just like that, the matter of Brandon and Claire was left to the courts, their trial scheduled for a month later.

Soon, justice will be served, and my revenge completed.

And yet, the triumph I should have felt was overshadowed by something heavier.

Dean was leaving.

After he left for Raven Tower that day, he accompanied me for three more days. Then finally, he told me he had to return to Agate Country for urgent business.

I could sense his reluctance as he said it, and honestly, I was no better.

In fact, a quiet dread coiled in my chest, whispering: what if he doesn’t come back?

After all, from seventeen onward, he had lived in Agate Country for ten years. His mother was there. His company was there.

It wouldn’t be strange if he chose to remain there for good.

But what could I do?

Stop him?

The thought tempted meand I even knew the surest way to keep him here.

The deadline.

The two days he’d given me to answer him after our kiss had long since passed.

With Brandon’s downfall sealed, my heart had already decided.

If I told himmaybe he would stay. Or at the very least, come back sooner.

But in the end, I didn’t say it. Not even when I knew he was waitingholding back out of consideration for what I’d just been through.

Then I went with him to the airport.

Right before the security checkpoint, he stopped and turned to me. His eyes were heavy with unspoken emotion as he asked quietly, Don’t you have anything to say to me?

My fists clenched, then loosened, then clenched again.

But at the last moment, I still lowered my head and whispered, No.

I didn’t see his expression, but I didn’t need to. I knew he was definitely hurt and disappointed by my answer, because the next second-

Goodbye then,he said flatly, and without another word, he turned and walked toward the checkpoint.

He didn’t turn around. Not even once.

That was the first time Dean had ever lost his temper with me.

And I couldn’t blame him for it. The fault was mine.

So, after his silhouette vanished completely, I turned and walked away.

In the days that followed, I buried myself in tasks, hoping the busyness would dull the ache of his absence.

A week later, my life had fallen into a steady rhythm as I slowly checked off a few items from my todo list.

Open a new bank account? Check

Receive my accumulated earnings from FeatherInk? Check.

Resume my comics? Check.

Relearning driving? Check.

Negotiate adaptation rights with FeatherInk? Check.

Even declining FeatherInk’s Creator of the Year Award was a decision I had made with clarity. Not because I feared revealing my alias, but for two reasons:

First, I wasn’t in the mood for it. Second, with Brandon’s scandal still raging, I knew if I appeared, the netizens would dig into my identity.

And then Longing Birdmy sanctuary, my craftwould be tainted, tied forever to the name I loathed most.

Brandon’s exfiancée.

As for being the Caldwellsyoungest daughter, I didn’t care if that was exposed. That was one identity I can’t escape for life.

But Longing Bird was mine alone. I wanted readers who came for my stories, not for gossip and

clout.

Fortunately, Freya understood after I explained it to her.

But even though I didn’t attend, my work still won the top prize, and she accepted it on my behalf.
