The SAT pep dragged on for a solid hour. After Marcus wrapped up his speech, it was the teachers‘ turn to hit the stage, sharing tips and tricks for acing the SAT. This was the meat of the rally, and every student was all
ears.
Edith was jotting down the important notes in her notebook when, all of a sudden, a heavy sense of foreboding washed over her. She couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was scheming in the shadows, and whatever it was, it was targeted straight at her.
She realized this was the reward from the System–the ability to sense a plot before it even unfolds.
She planned to go check things out after the rally ended. Since it was her first time relying on this new power, even she didn’t know what she might find.
At the entrance of Sunspire High School, Mia slipped out of an alley, glancing around to make sure the coast was clear. She pulled a stack of flyers from her backpack and started slapping them up on the wall.
She slapped a bucket of paste on the wall and plastered dozens of flyers across half of it before moving on to the next one.
Since the school was still in session, the entrance was deserted, and she worked quickly. In less than twenty minutes, the entire wall was covered in flyers.
Mia gave a cold chuckle and called Hallie. She said, “It’s done. When do I get my money?”
Hallie replied, “What’s the rush? Snap a photo and send it to me first.” Her voice was laced with obvious venom and scheming.
With just seven days left until the SAT, most students were trying to keep themselves calm and get their heads in the game. But Hallie had other ideas–she was going to mess with Edith’s mindset right before crunch time and make her crack.
This was payback for what Edith did to her back at the piano competition, ruining her mood and nerves just moments before she had to perform.
With the help of Liam, Hallie had tracked down Mia–some girl from a county high school who already had bad blood with Edith.
Hallie figured Mia was the perfect person to do her dirty work–after all, Mia wasn’t a local, so no one would trace anything back to her.
She got in touch with Mia, laid out her plan, and promised her payment. Mia agreed almost instantly.
Mia ended the call and took a quick photo of the whole wall plastered with flyers.
Right then, Marcus finished his speech and walked out through the school gates, with Kane following diligently at his side.

Marcus kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, never glancing to the left or right.

Kane, as his assistant, had made it a habit–almost an instinct–to constantly survey his surroundings.
Kane swept over the area out of habit, and he caught sight of Mia snapping photos of the wall. He barely registered it at first, but after a second look, his eyes widened in shock.
He thought, ‘Isn’t that Ms. Edith Lovett’s picture on the wall? Is somebody using her photo for some shady ad without her knowing?‘
Kane said, “Mr. Larson, look over there.”
Marcus turned his head, his sharp eyes landing on the photo of Edith in an instant.
It was clearly some kind of candid shot–might’ve been snapped without her knowing–but no matter how the photo was taken, her beauty and radiance still stood out.
The entire wall was plastered with pictures of Edith.
A sense of unease crept over Marcus. He strode over, his eyes narrowing as he read the words scrawled next to the photos.
A line read: [Edith From Sunspire High School, A Homewrecker. Kick Out This Shameless Student.]
Another line read: [She Knew He Was Married and Still Went After Him–Edith, Wrecking Homes and Defying Every Decent Rule. She’s Not Fit to Be Human.]
Some lines read: [A Wife’s Tearful Plea: Homewrecker Edith, I Beg You–Leave My Family Alone.]
Every flyer was plastered with this kind of vicious smear. There was no info about the husband, no photo of the so–called wife–just Edith’s face plastered everywhere.
Anyone with common sense would know this was just someone framing Edith–a nasty smear job.
Marcus’s face darkened as he ordered, “Bring the girl here.”
Mia was still busy snapping photos, completely oblivious that she’d already been made. She’d just sent the pic and was ready to slip away when a hand suddenly clamped down on her shoulder. She yelled, “Who the hell…”
Before she could finish, Kane drove his foot into her knee without warning.
Caught totally off guard, Mia crashed onto the cold concrete; her skirt gave no protection, and pain knifed through her knees so sharply she thought the bones might shatter.
The next second, a pair of dress shoes appeared right in front of her, sharp and intimidating.
Mia looked up and saw Marcus. She suddenly remembered seeing him before at the bookstore with Edith.
Marcus stared Mia down as he demanded, “Talk. Who told you to do this?” His gaze was icy and unwavering, eyes locked on her. Even with that serious look on his face, he was still impossibly handsome–like a prince straight out of a storybook.

Mia’s heart was thumping wildly. She replied, “Nobody put me up to this. I’m just sticking up for the real victim! Edith is a total homewrecker–she went after a married guy and is trying to elbow the wife out of the
picture.
“She acts all innocent at school, but who knows what kind of filthy stuff she’s doing behind the scenes.”
Marcus lifted his foot, the tip of his shoe pushing up under Mia’s chin, then jerked it upward and knocked her back with a sharp kick.
Mia toppled over, hitting the ground as bloody foam spilled from the corner of her mouth.
Marcus strode up and planted his shoe right on her face.
Kane watched quietly from the side, completely unfazed by what he was seeing.
Marcus had never been some saintly gentleman. He wouldn’t build Nexus Group into an empire without having real ruthlessness in his bones. He was a man of extremes–one half almost angelic, the other totally consumed by darkness.
But ever since those two sides of him started to merge, Marcus wasn’t half as savage as he used to be— especially when Edith was around. Sometimes, Kane would almost mistake him for some soft–hearted rookie, not the infamous Marcus everyone whispered about.
Seeing what Marcus was doing now, Kane knew–deep down, he was still the same dangerous man. Lately, it had just been quiet because nobody had dared to touch his bottom line, so he’d kept that edge hidden away.
Marcus pressed, “I’m only going to ask this once more. Who sent you?”
Every word was cold as steel, stabbing straight between Mia’s eyes, leaving her shaken to the core. Mia was utterly petrified, the sharp tang of blood spreading across her tongue, terror pounding in her chest until she could barely breathe.
She was on the verge of breaking down, tears pricking her eyes as she stammered out, “I–I don’t know. She reached out to me first, but never told me her name. I swear, I really have no idea who she is.”
Marcus studied her for a moment and could see she was telling the truth. He ordered, “Find out who set this
Kane bowed his head and replied, “Yes, sir.”
Before he started digging for answers, Kane made sure to call the police.
The offense itself wasn’t that serious, but with Kane making a point to explain things directly to the officers, Mia would be lucky to get out of jail in less than three or four months.
