Time flew by. The countdown to the SAT showed just seven days left. All the seniors were growing more and more nervous. The monthly tests were over, but weekly pop quizzes still kept everyone on edge–they were like mini practice runs for the real thing.
Edith’s grades had skyrocketed, and in the latest exam, she ranked tenth out of the whole grade, beating out 80% of the Honors Class.
Dan stared at her, completely stunned. He said, “Edith, with grades like this, you could easily get into Bonrea University or any top college in the country.”
Sunspire High School was one of the best in the province, and every year, more than a dozen students made it to elite schools like Bonrea University.
In the Honors Class, almost everyone got accepted to the nation’s most famous universities, and with Edith now ranked tenth among them, she could pretty much pick any college she wanted.
Dan couldn’t help but sigh to himself. When Edith first transferred to Sunspire High School, he hadn’t thought much of her. If he hadn’t seen how seriously she took her studies, he honestly would have kicked her over to Class Two without a second thought.
But afterwards, Edith never slowed down. Her grades rose so quickly it was almost unbelievable–she was the student he had personally coached from the ground up.
Dan asked in a gentle voice, “Have you thought about what you want to major in?”
Edith shook her head. She’d already picked out which college to attend; as for her major, she hadn’t given it much thought yet.
Dan said, “No rush. We’ll figure it out together once your scores are out and it’s time for college applications. Oh, right–there’s a SAT pep rally coming up.
“You’re the student who’s improved the most, so you’ll need to go on stage and give a speech for about five minutes. Better get ready.”
Edith replied, “Mr. Humphrey, I just finished a full set of practice questions and my brain’s fried. Can I pass on this?”
Dan put on a mock–serious face and said, “Most students would kill for a chance to speak in front of the whole school, and you want to bail? But since you’re not up for it, I won’t force you.
“This time, I’ll let Larry be the student representative and give the speech.”
In her heart, Edith whispered a silent apology to Larry,
The SAT pep rally was mandatory for all the seniors. Just like always, it began with the principal’s routine speech, then the assistant principal took the stage, and finally it was time for Larry to speak as the student rep.
The girls couldn’t help gossiping among themselves.

One said, “Oh my god, Larry is so dreamy.”
Another said, “Honestly, I still think his brother is even hotter.”

Someone exclaimed, “Wait, you mean that super handsome guy who gave a speech here last time? Now I totally remember his face. I’m done for–I’m head over heels for him.”
A girl said, “Get real, and just pay attention to Larry.”
Someone complained, “Larry gives a speech every single month. It’s always the same stuff–I’m not even listening anymore, I’m just here for the eye candy.”
Larry himself couldn’t even remember how many times he’d been up there already. He was getting sick of repeating the same speech every time–even he’d tuned himself out by the end.
When he finally wrapped it up, he stepped down, feeling more relieved than anything.
Just then, the host could barely contain his excitement as he announced, “For this pep rally, we’ve got a special guest–a real heavy hitter. Please welcome Mr. Marcus Larson.”
All eyes were glued to the stage as Marcus, in a sharp black suit, made his way up.
Edith was caught off guard. She thought, ‘Why is he here giving a speech again?‘
Edith had been swamped with schoolwork lately, and it had been ages since she’d seen Marcus in person. Even on chat, they’d only talked about work–nothing beyond that.
As soon as Edith glanced up, she could instantly feel Marcus’s eyes locked right on her.
All around her, a chorus of sharp gasps burst out from the girls nearby.
One exclaimed, “No way, he is actually looking over here.”
Another gasped, “He’s looking at me.”
A girl said, “Oh my god, I’m about to pass out from happiness.”
Cathy just rolled her eyes and thought, ‘Can these girls stop fooling themselves? It’s so obvious that Mr. Larson is looking at Edith, not any of them!
Noreen whipped around with a fierce glare and snapped, “Can you keep it down? You’re so loud.”
The girls instantly hushed. Even if Noreen didn’t have the same bad girl vibe she once did, her fierce reputation in class still held strong–no one really dared to mess with her.
Marcus stood center stage, practically glowing with charisma. He spoke in an easygoing tone, “Hey, everyone, I’m Marcus. Not too long ago, I was right where you are–going through the same stuff, stressing over the
same test.
“Stay on your path–the future’s waiting for you, just up ahead.”

His words were plain enough, but somehow, when Marcus said them, even everyday sentences got everyone fired up for real.
Thunderous applause filled the room.
At that moment, Marcus shot the host a look.
Picking up a bouquet, the host walked on stage with a bright smile and announced, “Mr. Larson wants to recognize how phenomenal this year’s seniors are.
“He’s decided to give this bouquet to the most outstanding student here, wishing them the best of luck on the SAT.”
With that, the host passed the bouquet into Marcus’s hands.
Just moments ago, Marcus was the picture of confidence, but now he suddenly seemed nervous. If one looked closely, one’d spot his ears slowly turning red.
Marcus had done his homework online–apparently, girls absolutely loved getting flowers. But he didn’t really have any reason to give Edith flowers. After wracking his brains, he finally came up with a plausible excuse. His gaze slowly fell on Edith.
Edith shuddered. She thought, ‘Seriously? Is he actually going to hand me flowers in front of everyone? Just seven days left–why can’t he let me glide through the end of high school without any more drama?‘ She shot him a glare.
Marcus immediately averted his gaze. He thought, ‘It looks like the flowers will never leave my hands.‘
Down in the crowd, people were already whispering and gossiping like crazy.
One said, “So, who do you think Mr. Larson’s giving the flowers to?”
Another said, “Come on, isn’t it obvious? It’s got to be Larry. Larry is Mr. Larson’s brother, after all.”
Larry chimed in, “He’s my uncle, not my brother. Don’t get the family tree mixed up.”
Deep down, Larry didn’t think the flowers were for him. For the past few days, Fiona had been calling him nonstop, grilling him about what was going on between Marcus and Edith.
Larry wasn’t sure how Edith felt, but Marcus’s feelings were pretty obvious. Larry was certain that those flowers were definitely meant for Edith.
Just then, Marcus said, “The most outstanding student at Sunspire High School is, of course, Larry. Larry, come on up and claim the bouquet that’s rightfully yours.”
Larry was taken aback for a moment. He grumbled inwardly, ‘You must be kidding me. Seriously, it’s a bouquet of roses and lilies. Anyone can tell those are meant for a girl, not me.’
But since he’d been singled out, Larry had no choice but to trudge up on stage. He awkwardly clutched the bouquet, forcing out a stiff smile. He mumbled, “Thank you, Uncle Marcus.”

Marcus gave him a firm pat on the shoulder and said, “Come on, Larry, you got this. Wishing you all the best on your SATS.”
After all these years of school, not once had Marcus ever given Larry a word of encouragement. The only reason he would get any encouragement from Marcus this time was Edith.
Larry glanced at Edith and saw her shining like the star of her own show, radiant amid the crowd. She was smiling softly—and he simply couldn’t tell whether that smile was meant for him or for Marcus.
