Xavier said, “No, he hasn’t.”

Becky frowned. “I thought you were his good friend. How could he not tell you something like this? That’s not cool.”
Xavier looked puzzled. “He really likes Sharon?”
“Probably. I’m just guessing,” Becky said. “Sharon told me he’s been showing up at the Yale house every day for dinner lately. Barry and Mary really like him.”
At that, Xavier’s expression shifted.
Becky immediately sensed the change in mood. She turned her head to look at him.
Xavier’s face was clouded with concern.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
Xavier looked up at her, opened his mouth to speak, then said nothing.
Becky was baffled.
All the way home, Xavier’s face stayed tense.
When Becky got out of the car, she reached over and pinched his cheek. “Stop frowning already. Come on, you’d look ugly if you do.”
Xavier gave her a pitiful, almost wounded look.
Becky withdrew her hand and rubbed her fingers together.
Huh. Smooth. Nice texture.
“Come on, let’s go inside.”
At dinner, Xavier barely touched his food–not that it was unusual. He never ate much at night.
Becky, on the other hand, had known real hunger before. She ate like she was a complete glutton–one bowl of whatever carbs on a light day, two big ones on a normal day, with several side dishes to go with it.
Xavier left the table before she was even done eating, carrying his plate upstairs.
Becky watched his back with a thoughtful expression.
She remembered clearly–he’d been perfectly fine before she took that phone call with Sharon. It was right after the call ended that his whole mood changed.
What had she said?

It was all stuff about Brendon and Sharon.
But what’s there to be upset about?
Just then, Abigail walked by carrying James in her arms.
“Ms. Becky, what’s up with Mr. Xavier? James called him a bunch of times and he didn’t even respond.”
Becky shrugged. “Who knows?”
Abigail hesitated. “Did you two have a fight?”
Becky: ”

“If we had, do you think I’d still be eating this well?”
Abigail wanted to say, Maybe you’re just really chill.

But she wisely kept her thoughts to herself and took James to play elsewhere.

At dinner, Sharon kept her head down, barely even looking at Brendon.
Mary frowned. “What’s with you today?”
Sharon didn’t answer. She wouldn’t even reach out for dishes that were a little far away.
Brendon chuckled quietly, picked out a piece of fish, carefully removed the bones, and placed it in Sharon’s bowl.
Sharon promptly picked it up and dropped it into his bowl.
No way was she eating something he served her.
Mary saw it and scolded, “What are you doing? Stop acting up.”
Brendon said calmly, “It’s alright, ma’am. She’s mad at me. She’ll be fine in a bit.”
Mary didn’t say anything else.
After dinner, Sharon ran straight into her room.
Mary dragged her right back out and shoved her toward the door. “Go walk Brendon out.”
Then bam–the door slammed shut behind her.
Sharon gritted her teeth and marched toward the elevator without a word.
She pressed the button and stood there, refusing to look at Brendon.
Brendon rubbed his nose.
All this because he saw some underwear? Was it really that big of a deal?
It wasn’t like he meant to. She was the one who’d left her stuff lying around. He’d only gone in to see what her room looked like.
The elevator arrived. Sharon stepped in first, and Brendon followed.
There was already an elderly lady from upstairs inside. When she saw Sharon, she smiled warmly. “Sharon, did you eat dinner yet?”
Sharon answered politely, “Yes, I did.”
The old lady looked at Brendon next. “Is this your boyfriend?”
Sharon glanced at Brendon. “Ma’am I don’t know this man.”
Brendon: “…”
He smiled. “How can you say that? I just had dinner at your place.”
The old woman froze for a second, then burst out laughing.
“Oh my, young man, you must’ve made your girlfriend mad. You better make it up to her. Sharon’s a good girl–we’ve watched her grow up. If you’ve got her, you’re lucky.”
Brendon smiled. “You’re absolutely right. I will.”
Sharon: “.
She glared at Brendon and said quickly, “Ma’am, it’s not like that between us.”
The old woman just kept smiling.
The elevator reached the first floor. The old lady stepped out first, but not before turning back to remind him, “Young man,

make sure you make it up to her.”
Brendon said, “I will.”
He reached out and held the door button. “You go first.”
Sharon stood there fuming, refusing to move.

“Mr. Brendon, are we that kind of relationship? And you just sat there telling the lady ‘yes yes yes‘ like it’s nothing? Do you have any idea what kind of damage you’re doing to my reputation? You can’t just say stuff like that!”
Brendon put on an innocent face. “Elderly people like that–you can explain all you want, they won’t believe you. They only trust what they see. Rather than wasting your breath, it’s easier to go along with it. Otherwise, they’ll never stop.”
Sharon: “…”
He kind of had a point. But also, no.
“Are you getting out or not?”
A guy who had just gotten off work was waiting outside the elevator, looking dead tired and clearly annoyed.
Maybe it was a shared sense of being overworked that made her sympathetic, but Sharon dashed out of the elevator and dragged Brendon with her, leaving it free for the poor guy.
