Brendon had been about to snap at the man for his rude tone, but before he could get a word out, Sharon yanked him away and the elevator doors closed in front of him.

The two of them walked toward the neighborhood gate.

Brendon spoke up. You didn’t eat enough at dinner, did you?

Sharon touched her stomach.

She really hadn’t.

Brendon understood immediately and offered, Let me treat you to a latenight snack.

Sharon was temptedbut she didn’t want to go with Brendon.

I’ll pay,Brendon added. Whatever you want.

Sharon hesitated for a bit before answering, “Barbecue, I guess.”

Brendon smiled. Perfect. You lead the way, I’ll foot the bill.”

He was sure that someone like Sharon, a total foodie, would know exactly where the best place was.

Sharon instantly forgot all the awkwardness between them. Her eyes lit up. You know what? I actually do know a place that’s amazing.

Brendon grinned. Then let’s go.

Becky returned to the bedroom. Xavier had already showered and was lying quietly in bed.

Becky tried to act casual as she walked over to the nightstand to grab something, sneaking a glance at the bed.

Xavier was staring blankly at the ceiling like he’d lost all hope in life. Okay, maybe not that dramaticbut something was clearly off.

What are you doing?

Xavier’s voice cut through the silence.

Becky scratched her head. II’m getting something.

What?

I’m just

Her eyes landed on the phone on the nightstand. She grabbed it.

I’m getting the phone.

Xavier finally turned his head. That’s my phone.”

Becky looked down at the black matte phone in her hand. Yep, definitely Xavier’s.

Oh, right1, uh, wanted to see if you had any games on it. I felt like playing.

Xavier stared at her for a long moment. I don’t.

Oh. Then never mind.

She was just about to put it down when-

Becky would’ve loved to say she didn’t mean to look. She really didn’t. It just caught her eye.

She immediately tossed the phone onto Xavier’s chest and bolted into the walkin closet, grabbing some clothes before heading straight into the bathroom.

Now Xavier looked confused.

Suspicious, he picked up the phone and opened the message.

Xavier, it’s Yulia. I’ve been trying to call you, but none of the numbers go through. Did you change it? I want to see you. Even if we can’t be a couple anymore, can’t we at least be friends? Let’s meet tomorrow at noon at the café downstairs from Glory Corp. I’ll be waiting.”

Xavier didn’t reply. He moved his thumb slightlyand deleted the message.

He’d already blocked and deleted Yulia’s number. There was no reason to stay in touch. No point.

She must have used a new number.

Yulia waited for a while, but her phone stayed silent. She frowned.

Grace walked over to the sofa and sat beside her.

Well? What did Xavier say?

Yulia lowered her head. He didn’t reply.

Grace shoved her hard, enough to knock her sideways on the couch.

Then she snapped, What the hell is wrong with you? Can’t even hold on to a man. Useless!

Jake was sitting nearby playing games on Grace’s phone. He looked up and sneered.

Yulia, you’re a total loser. What’s the point of you even being alive? You’re wasting air.”

Yulia was furious. You’re the loser, Jake! You suck at school. You got what, six points on your math test? I could randomly guess answers and still beat you. And Chinesefifteen points? Seriously? And you still have the nerve to play games? You’re the one who should disappear.

Smack!

Grace slapped Yulia hard across the face. Her eyes

welled up with tears.

Grace scolded, Is that how a sister talks? Wishing her brother dead? What kind of twisted heart do you have?

Yulia bit her lip. Jake said the same thing to me. Why didn’t you hit him? You only ever hit me. You’re so unfair!

Her eyes were full of pain and resentment.

Darren was watching a soccer game and turned to them with irritation. What the hell is all that noise? If you’re gonna fight, take it outside. Don’t disturb me.

Jake quickly said, Yulia started it.

Darren looked at his daughter, his face darkening.

What’s your problem now?

Yulia mumbled, I didn’t do anything

Darren gave her a look full of disgust, Always crying. So annoying.
