Claudia waved her phone, looking totally relaxed. “No clue, but I’ve got a mouth, so I’ll just ask.”

Alice froze, staring at the screen as dread crept in.

“Who did you call?”

Claudia didn’t hesitate. She put a hand on her hip and shouted into the phone, dripping with sass, “Sterling! Your fiancée just barged into my villa! If you’re not here in five minutes to deal with her, I’ll toss you out myself!”

Alice, crumpled on the floor in tears, stared at Claudia in shock. She was so stunned that she forgot to cry.

Did she seriously just talk to Sterling like that? Is she nuts?

But then a low, familiar voice came through the phone, laced with amusement, and her blood ran cold.

“I don’t have a fiancée. Don’t throw labels on me.”

Claudia glanced at Alice, who looked lost, and shook her head. “Funny, she swears you do. She says you’ll back her up.”

Sterling had just left a meeting. He rubbed his forehead, sounding tired. “Who’s making this claim?”

“Alice Jensen.”

“Who’s that?”

The room went dead quiet. Both women stared at each other.

Even the family dog didn’t recognize her. And now, neither did Sterling. Alice, already crushed from the morning, broke down sobbing right there on the floor.

But the embarrassment didn’t end there.

Two minutes later, bodyguards appeared out of nowhere. They picked up Alice, who was covered in dirt and tears, and hauled her out.

Everything happened so quickly that neither Claudia nor Alice could even react.

Sterling’s light laugh came through the phone. “Five minutes to spare. Guess that means I get to keep my spot.”

“You’re not even curious what went down? Aren’t you scared you’re kicking out the wrong person? What if I were the one bullying her?”

Sterling’s tone stayed calm. “It doesn’t matter. If she’s bothering you, then she’s in the wrong.”

It sounded a little unreasonable, but …

“Sterling, what should I do? Honestly, it feels kinda nice being spoiled.”

He chuckled. “The future Mrs. Romero should enjoy the benefits.”

But when he thought about that random woman who appeared earlier, his mood shifted.

“I’ll investigate it. You did the right thing telling me first. If anyone else dares to cause trouble, and you don’t feel like dealing with them, just kick them out. Don’t let anyone step on you. Claudia, that’s your home, your turf–be fierce.”

That mix of cocky and sweet didn’t match the stories about him being a cold–hearted man who could ruin someone with a single word.

Clint, silently watching from the side, just smiled as he held his files tighter.

The morning mess didn’t bother Claudia at all.

But when Sterling came home that evening, he explained the whole backstory himself.

His mother had once been close to a friend. Isabella was amazing on the cello, while her friend was a brilliant dancer.

They were both talented and beautiful, and people used to call them the shining pair of the art world.

After Isabella married into the Romero family, she basically vanished from the spotlight.

Her friend never knew why, tried over and over to talk her out of it, but nothing worked. In the end, they drifted apart.
