Sterling chuckled. “Alright then. Guest’s choice.”

The conversation shifted, and the heavy mood from when they first got in the car started to fade.

The driver stole a glance at Sterling through the rearview mirror, catching a rare softness in his expression.

Lately, Sterling had been smiling more, and honestly, he seemed easier to please.

Today was no exception, he naturally ended up back in Claudia’s space again.

Before the two of them even left the house, Daron was already mad. Its former owner and current owner were going out to have fun without it. When Claudia said goodbye, Daron refused to respond, only giving them its angry little back as it sat sulking at the front door.

The sarcastic tone didn’t slip past her. Claudia, catching the vibe, suddenly had a flash of inspiration and replied righteously, “Of course! Because its owner treats me well. You’re nice to me, so I have to return the favor.”

Sterling gave her a half–smile, half–smirk. “Always got something to say, huh?”

Claudia just smiled sweetly, playing dumb.

They took their time, so by the time they got home, it was already pretty late.

But instead of Daron waiting at the door, it was a very familiar mushroom–shaped figure.

As the car’s headlights lit up the front porch, Alice–who’d been squatting so long her legs had gone numb–perked up.

“Sterling!”

Then, when she saw Claudia, she quickly lowered her head and muttered a much more respectful, “Hi, Claudia.”

Just hearing her name from Alice’s mouth was enough to stun Claudia, the shift in attitude was that extreme.
