Chapter 125 Echoes of an Apology
Alice’s apology hit so hard and loud that Claudia almost thought she could hear an echo.
She turned to look at Sterling.
Sterling, meanwhile, was slowly starting to remember who Alice even was.
Back when he was a kid, Celine had taken good care of him, and after growing up, he still visited her once in a while–though not very often, for various reasons.
Alice, as Celine’s niece, was well–loved by the family and often visited too.
With all the coming and going, naturally, they’d run into each other now and then.
Alice had developed a crush on the handsome and aloof Sterling from a young age. Even during the years when he was living abroad, she secretly kept tabs on him.
But Sterling back then was consumed with survival and vengeance, there was no way he would’ve noticed some girl he’d seen two or three times in the passing.
In his mind, both Alice’s name and face were a blur. At best, he vaguely remembered that Celine had a relative like her.

Seeing that neither of them was saying anything, Alice gave a pitiful look and mumbled, “I really am sorry. I won’t do it again.”

After getting shut down so hard by Claudia that day, she had immediately run to Celine looking- for comfort.
But instead of sympathy, Celine had scolded her hard.
That whole arranged marriage thing? It had been nothing more than a joke between Celine and Isabella back when they were young. They’d only mentioned it once, but because Alice already had feelings for Sterling, she latched onto it.
In fact, the comment was made before Alice or Sterling had even met.
And even though Celine couldn’t claim to fully understand Sterling, she had a pretty good sense of how he operated.
He wasn’t someone who could be guilt–tripped by old favors or bound by family sentiment. She’d never once thought of using their past to ask anything of him. Honestly, she didn’t even feel like she had done anything worthy of being repaid.
All she wanted was to be able to face Isabella in the future without feeling ashamed.

Finished
Alice was the only daughter of Celine’s oldest brother, and the whole family doted on her. She had her flaws, sure, but she’d never caused any real trouble until now.
Celine had never imagined that Alice, harboring those kinds of feelings, would be so easily egged on by someone and actually go confront Sterling’s girlfriend.
She’d been furious and embarrassed.
No matter what kind of relationship that girl had with Sterling, it was the first time he’d ever defended someone so openly. As an elder, Celine knew she had to take the situation seriously.
Who would’ve thought the problem would end up being from her side?
She had torn into Alice, told her that the whole arranged marriage thing was complete nonsense, and ordered her to apologize to Sterling’s girlfriend in person.
She also warned Alice that if Sterling got angry and came after her, she wouldn’t step in to help, not even as family.
Alice had been left totally stunned.
It was the first time Celine had ever yelled at her like that.
But Alice wasn’t the kind of person who couldn’t take criticism.
That whole one–sided crush had been chaos entirely of her own making. Sterling’s tone on the phone had made everything painfully clear. The truth was, she just couldn’t swallow her pride..
But before she had time to fully come to terms with that, more hits just kept coming.
Alice was on the verge of tears. “Claudia, Sterling and I really aren’t close at all. I only ever saw him a few times when I was taking dance lessons at Aunt Celine’s place. If you’ll forgive me, I’ll do anything you want.”
Claudia’s eyes flicked, interest sparking.
“You dance?”
Alice felt a chill run down her spine under that gaze.
She gave a nervous little “Uh–huh.”
