“Before the audition, I had already made up my mind. Aside from Claudia, I wanted to help. you, too. I would take both of you in as my students.

“And you–one of the only two I’d pinned my hopes on–performed your sister’s choreography during the audition and called it

your own.”

Seeing Lydia’s look of disbelief, Celine said softly, “Are you wondering why I didn’t call you out right then?

“I realized it the moment you started dancing.

“You might not have realized it, but I’d helped Claudia create that piece. I’d seen a more complete version than what you performed.

“But it wasn’t just me there that day. There were other industry professionals. You were still young, so I decided to give you a chance, which is why I didn’t say anything in public.

“After the audition, I spoke to your parents in private.

“They begged me not to say anything.

“They said Claudia had already lost her shot at dance, but you two had always been close. She wanted you to stand on the stage in her place one day.

“Your parents said you were carrying the dreams of two people.

“They pleaded with me not to ruin you.”

There was a touch of pity and regret in her eyes. “Claudia was hurt and hopeless. No one felt that loss more than me, so I gave in.

“I don’t know what they told you afterward, but I really regret it now.”
