Claudia didn’t even know how to respond to that.

The Romeros might’ve had cold, distant relationships, but still, Waylon had betrayed his own flesh and blood. His brother was dead, and he threw away everything just to keep the girl.

“No wonder Donovan hates Fiona so much.”

Sterling’s expression twisted. “That’s not the reason.”

Claudia looked at him, confused.

Sterling let out a slow breath, his tone somewhere between resigned and uncomfortable. “If Leon hadn’t died, Fiona probably would’ve become their new stepmother.”

“Cough-” Claudia choked on her own spit.

She stared at him, completely stunned, and couldn’t spot even the slightest sign he was joking.
