It wasn’t hard to imagine that if someone got along with Fiona, she was probably the kind of person who made you feel calm and at case, like a breath of fresh spring air.
Credit where it was due, the Romeros, father and sons alike, sure had consistent taste in
women.
And in a way, Fiona’s revenge had kind of worked.
The father and son were torn apart. The brothers turned on each other. Quinton’s generation was pretty much wiped off the map as far as power was concerned. That was why Donovan shifted focus to grooming the next generation to find a successor.
“So, does that make Waylon the real winner? He basically took down his father and brothers for Fiona. The man went all in,” Claudia asked.
Sterling’s gaze darkened. “He did treat Fiona with absolute devotion. Can’t say the same for everyone else.”
“What do you mean?” Claudia looked up at him from the crook of his arm, eyes wide with curiosity.
“There’s no proof, but Leon’s death … Waylon might’ve had a hand in it,” Sterling said quietly.
Claudia’s worldview took another hit.
Sterling would never throw out an accusation like that unless he was at least 70% sure.
“Does Donovan know?” she asked.
He shook his head. “Leon’s death triggered a massive purge. Donovan used it as an excuse to clean house, got rid of a bunch of Romero Corp board elders and several branches of the extended family. A few unacknowledged illegitimate sons died too. Maybe Donovan was scared of uncovering something even worse, so when he found Fiona, he stopped digging.”
Honestly, if you looked deep enough, this entire family might be villains.
Claudia let out a slow hiss through her teeth.
Compared to the Romeros–so vast, so tangled, and full of filth–the old Lancaster family she used to think was a mess now felt almost innocent.
Thinking back to Waylon’s cheerful face when he’d invited them to his home, she felt a chill crawl down her spine.

No wonder Yvonne didn’t even look at Fiona, the woman who destroyed her marriage and helped kill her husband, with as much hatred as she looked at Waylon. That disgust in her eyes toward him was hard to miss.
Suddenly, Claudia reached out and lightly punched Sterling in the chest.
Sterling caught her fist and smiled. “Scared now?”
Claudia pouted. “You really shouldn’t have told me all this. Now I can’t even look them in the eye.”
Dinner was going to be a true test of her acting skills.
Sterling gave her an innocent look. “They’re the ones who did all the terrible things, and I’m the one getting punished?”
“Don’t care. That’s what you get for being a Romero.”
“I could always change my name to Lancaster.”
“Please don’t. That name’s cursed, I don’t even want it myself.”
“How about this, when we get married, we both change our names?”
“Hahaha, your dad and Donovan would probably die of rage.”
“Let them.”
On a rainy, heavy–skied afternoon, the two of them curled up in Sterling’s room, gossiping and teasing each other. Time flew by, and before they knew it, it was dinner.
As expected, Yvonne didn’t show.
Waylon, in contrast to his earlier anxiety and intensity, was surprisingly calm tonight, quietly serving Fiona food, peeling shrimp for her with care.
Who would’ve thought a man who loved his wife so tenderly could also have turned on his own brother over a woman?
Even if he wasn’t the mastermind, the fact that he might’ve been involved made his hands no cleaner.
The thing was, Leon hadn’t been some flawless man. He’d betrayed his wife emotionally, maybe even worse, but as the eldest son and chosen heir, he had always looked out for his full- blooded siblings.
