Fiona didn’t look scared or guilty, and she definitely wasn’t trying to avoid anyone.
She neither cared for mockery nor minded about being iced out.
If not for how thin she was, you’d hardly guess she was a seriously ill patient.
Waylon was attentive, overly so, but Fiona stayed calm and distant the entire time.
Now she sat there eating the dishes Waylon had served her, composed and elegant, every move unhurried and precise.
When she noticed Claudia looking over, she even gave her a polite smile.
Her mindset? Unshakable.
Sterling, meanwhile, peeled a full plate of shrimp for Claudia, who was acting like a little hamster stealing glances at enemy lines, and refilled her half–empty glass of water.
He couldn’t figure out what was so fascinating about Fiona that Claudia had basically forgotten
to eat.
At this point, he was genuinely regretting telling her all those stories too early.
Macy and Jackson tried for a while to throw some passive–aggressive shade at Waylon and Fiona, but no one took the bait. Donovan stayed stone–faced, and Sterling made it very clear he had no interest in stepping into old grudges. He was fully focused on taking care of his girlfriend.
The would–be instigators swallowed their frustration and eventually shut up.
The second half of dinner was so quiet; it was eerie.
Claudia looked around at everyone, one by one, eating until she was completely full–leaving the other Romeros, who had been secretly watching her, feeling oddly frustrated.
Finally, dinner wrapped up and everyone started to rise from their seats.
That’s when Waylon suddenly stopped Donovan.
From the moment they arrived, he’d been stonewalled again and again. Even at dinner, he’d tried bringing it up a few times, only to get shut down.
But now, there was something unhinged in his eyes. A mix of desperation and a terrifying resolve.

He stared Donovan down, unwavering. “Dad. I need to talk to you. In private.”
The two of them went upstairs to the study.
Fiona remained seated, quietly sipping her drink, as if she already knew what was coming.
Outside, the sky had gone fully dark. The guests who had been getting ready to leave? Sat right back down in the living room. No one wanted to be the first to walk out now.
Claudia stood by the window for a moment, staring out at the torrential rain pouring down like the sky had been torn open. She didn’t know why, but a heavy, uneasy feeling settled in her chest.
Something felt off.
Sterling gently pulled her away from the window. “Tired? Want to head out early?”
She was just about to nod, when a sudden, panicked shout rang out from upstairs.
A maid, who had just gone up to the study with a fruit tray, screamed, “Somebody! Help! Something’s happened!”
Everyone in the room, already on edge from waiting so long, shot to their feet. Their expressions varied, but all of them rushed toward the stairs without hesitation.
Sterling guided Claudia over to the couch.
“Sit here. I’ll go
check.”
Claudia nodded obediently.
In just a few minutes, nearly every member of the Romeros had vanished up the staircase, crowding to get to the scene.
Only once the room fell silent did Claudia realize that she wasn’t alone. Fiona was still there,
too.
In the huge, quiet living room, it was just the two of them.
Fiona calmly poured a glass of water and slid it toward Claudia. “Have a drink.”
“Thanks,” Claudia said, taking it, but not drinking.
Fiona gave a soft smile, her voice gentle and flat, like she was just making small talk. “Romero men… They all carry a dangerous kind of obsession. Ms. Lancaster, you’re young, beautiful, and the world is wide. You could have much better options.”
