Chapter 199 Sterling Will Take the Responsibility
In that moment, Hailey truly felt the terror of death staring her in the face.
Claudia let out a cold laugh. “Who will take the responsibility? Of course, Sterling will.”

Her tone was icy, “Aunt Hailey, isn’t it true that in the Romero family, whoever holds power gets to decide the fate of others? Back then, you thought you could decide Isabella’s and Sterling’s fates. So, naturally, Sterling can decide the fate of you and your son now.”
She stood tall by the pond, holding Daron’s leash, looking down at Hailey and Logan struggling below her.
She had personally taken down every single photo from the bamboo garden’s side building.
Because of that, she remembered so many faces and scenes.
One that stuck with her most was that freezing winter when little Sterling had been tossed into the pond by Hailey’s order, forcing a thinly dressed Isabella to jump in and save him.
Back then, Hailey couldn’t win against Donovan’s children from his first marriage, so she took out her anger on Isabella and her son, since they had no one to protect them.
Now, Claudia was giving back everything Sterling and Isabella had endured, in exactly the same way it had been done to them.
Too bad the weather was still warm–it would’ve been better in winter.
All she could do now was keep them in the water a little longer, give them some extra bruises to make up for it.
As soon as Claudia said those words, Hailey stopped begging.
On the edge of life and death, old memories surfaced.
She realized with perfect clarity that Claudia was avenging Sterling.
A woman like this wouldn’t feel fear. She wouldn’t show mercy, either.
Hailey and her son were left soaking in that pond for nearly an hour.
Claudia wouldn’t allow anyone to help them, but whenever they ran out of strength and nearly passed out from choking, she had people drag them to the shore–just long enough for them to catch their breath–then kicked them right back in.
They remained trapped in that torment, always teetering between life and death.

It was torture enough to make everyone watching break out in a cold sweat.
Claudia played the role of a spoiled, vicious woman to the hilt.
She wouldn’t let anyone leave, so nobody dared slip away to call for help. They didn’t even dare touch their phones.
They were all terrified they might be the next ones thrown in the water.
Every servant present had been handpicked by Sterling, so they were even less likely to defy Claudia’s orders.
Everywhere else in the Romeros‘ Manor, laughter and cheerful chatter filled the rooms. Paula’s death cast a shadow, but everyone kept enjoying life as usual.
No one realized that just a short walk away, Hailey and her son hovered on the edge of death, over and over again.
The nightmare could come for any of them at any time.
Finally, a few people returning from horseback riding walked by the pond and caught sight of what was happening. They immediately shouted for help. That was how the rest of the Romeros learned what had happened.
By the time they were pulled out of the pond, Hailey and Logan were barely clinging to life and had to be taken away by ambulance.
The news was so shocking that everyone who had witnessed the scene was ordered to the front hall to see Donovan.
The youngsters were scared out of their minds, but Claudia–the culprit–remained completely calm.
She patted her hand, still sore from wielding the bamboo pole.
Then, she picked up Daron’s leash, and said, “Let’s go. It’s time for your snack.”
In the front hall, Donovan sat at the head of the room, his face drawn and tense.
