Sterling and Claudia were so deeply in love that no one else could possibly come between them.
Before coming, Frederick had already listened to Waylon and Fiona’s rundown on everyone in the Romeros, so he knew a fair bit about Sterling’s history.
The moment he realized Claudia wasn’t afraid of gossip and even stood up to her elders to defend Sterling, he knew his presence didn’t mean anything at all.
He didn’t doubt for a second that if any random pursuer showed up, Claudia would get them herself before Sterling even had to step in.

That was Claudia’s steadfast love–her way of making her partner feel truly secure.
Frederick let out a bitter laugh. That kind of devotion could make anyone jealous.
He remembered seeing her back in Altrix City. After being left behind, she pulled out her medal and patted herself on the shoulder, telling herself, “Claudia, you’re amazing.”
Back then, he thought she was great at loving herself.
But seven years later, he could see she was just as capable of loving someone else.
For a girl who had lived without love, her affection burned more sincerely and passionately than anyone else’s. What an irony.
Maybe Sterling had it rough for the first half of his life, but he was truly lucky in romance.
Frederick shook his head. He decided he might as well try getting close to her. Maybe he could find a sliver of a chance somewhere.
“Three days from now, my mom will be going to Marvonia for an artificial heart transplant. I’ll be leaving with them,” Frederick said.
Claudia shot him a suspicious look.
Is he really talking to me?
She nodded out of politeness. “Oh, that’s good.”

“When the surgery is over, I’ll go to Loscoqua by myself to look for the rare rainforest morpho butterflies there.”
Claudia’s eyes showed a hint of confusion. Weren’t they basically strangers? Why was he suddenly telling her all this?
Why would he share his plans with her?
Still, she caught something important.
If Frederick is heading abroad for more insect research, that means he’s giving up the Romeros succession, right?
Sterling had said that Donovan would never take back what he’d given to Waylon’s family, and he’d probably leave them a lot of money to make up for things.
But Frederick hadn’t exactly said he didn’t want the money, either.
Whatever. Pushing aside those messy thoughts, she decided that losing one more complicated person in Sterling’s life couldn’t possibly be a bad thing.
If it wasn’t a bad thing, then…
“That’s nice. I hope you have a safe trip.”
Frederick smiled faintly, resigned. He glanced over as Sterling, who was avoiding the servants, brought over cake and grapefruit juice from the restaurant. As Sterling approached, Frederick suddenly raised his voice and laughed, “When I come back, I’ll bring you a butterfly specimen from Loscoqua.”
Claudia was left scratching her head.
Watching Frederick walk away after that, she was totally baffled.
They’d only exchanged a few words, and now he was talking about bringing her a souvenir?
If he said this to everyone in the Romeros, he’d have to catch every butterfly in the rainforest.
She couldn’t help but laugh at the thought.
“What’s got you so happy?” a low voice rumbled in her ear.
“Hmph! You scared me!”
Claudia jumped at Sterling’s sudden appearance.
She turned and, still laughing, patted the chest of the man who’d bent down behind her chair.
