Men could always read each other’s minds, and Sterling knew exactly what Frederick was thinking.

But Claudia clearly hadn’t caught on, and there was no way he’d be dumb enough to help a rival explain his feelings for her.

He quickly hid his emotions and pushed the cake toward Claudia. “Don’t eat too much, or you won’t have room for dinner.”

“I can just eat less for dinner.”

“And then you’ll wake me up in the middle of the night because you’re starving and want a late- night snack?” He teased with a smile.

Well, some things really didn’t need to be said out loud, Claudia thought.

Sterling couldn’t help but pinch her cheek.

A moment later, he still couldn’t hold back.

He stared at her, his dark eyes lingering on her puffed–up cheeks. “So, what did you two talk about before I got here?”

“We talked about life, dreams, and values.”

Sterling’s gaze turned dangerous.

Sensing trouble, Claudia dropped the act and grinned. “He said he saw me in Altrix City seven years ago.”

“And?” Sterling gritted his teeth.

Seven years ago… he showed up pretty early.

“That’s it. I didn’t ask for details.” Claudia spread her hands, innocent. “It doesn’t matter when he saw me. I don’t remember him anyway.”

Hearing that, the tension in Sterling’s chest finally cased, and his gloomy face cleared in an

instant.

He couldn’t help but laugh to himself. Looks like my Claudia really doesn’t spare a glance for any guy with the wrong intentions.

Guess the other guy wasted his time.

If I’d told her I’d met her seven years ago, Claudia would have grilled me, analyzed every little detail, and tried to piece together every way we could have crossed paths, Sterling thought smugly.

In high spirits, he smiled and reached out to gently touch her earlobe. “What were you doing in Altrix City seven years ago?”

Claudia swallowed her cake. “I went there for an academic quiz.”

She’d won first place that year, but the memory wasn’t a pleasant one.

Sterling picked up on the flatness in her voice. He thought for a while and soon understood. Lydia was still ruling the Lancasters then, and Claudia hadn’t cut ties with her family, so she must’ve had a hard time.

He squeezed her hand.

Claudia gave him a reassuring smile. “It’s fine.”

Sterling didn’t press her about that unpleasant memory of the past.

But he couldn’t help wondering to himself. The Lancasters‘ adopted daughter wasn’t going to be in jail for long. The Lancasters had been forced to cough up a huge sum to Mandy for her sake, and now she carried the stain of a criminal record. When she finally got out, would the Lancasters still show the same unwavering favoritism to a daughter who brought them nothing but trouble and was no longer of any use?

Probably not.

Recently, Sterling had worn the Lancasters down to the bone, with Wilson and Clarence drained from running the company.

Under attack from all sides, the once–powerful Lancasters were barely hanging on. They were walking on eggshells.

Struggling to make ends meet always took a toll on a couple’s happiness, and it weighed just as heavily on every family facing hardship.

Sterling wasn’t in any rush to take them down.
