Because of that old incident, Sally eventually became a target of Lydia’s revenge too.
But maybe it was because Sally never fought back–never screamed, never resisted. Bullying her wasn’t even fun for them anymore, so they stopped after a while.
Still, Sally never regretted warning Claudia back then.
If it hadn’t been for Claudia later on, she would’ve never escaped the suffocating nightmare she
called home.
Shaking off those painful memories, Sally found herself wondering about Claudia and Jasper. After all those years apart, are they finally together now?
Back in high school, Claudia treated Jasper and Whitney the same way. But Sally could see what most people missed–the way Jasper’s eyes lit up around Claudia. His feelings for her burned bright and clear.
They never officially dated before graduation, but Sally always believed that one day they’d face their feelings head–on.
Would that kind of young love really survive the years?
When you’re young, love feels simple and brave. You believe you can take on the whole world for the person you love.
But when you grow up, life gets complicated. You start thinking about consequences, about yourself, and before you realize it, the person who once walked beside you is no longer there.
Jasper was driving up the mountain road when he saw Maverick trying to flag down cars. That was when he suddenly remembered–he used to hate Lydia.
He’d known Claudia long before Lydia ever came into the picture. He’d liked her since they were kids, that pretty girl who looked like a porcelain doll.
Then everything changed when tragedy hit the Lancasters. Lydia and her mother, Zoey, turned Claudia’s world upside down.
Jasper had always thought Lydia was a selfish outsider, forcing her way into a life that wasn’t hers. And he knew how much pain Claudia had suffered because of her.
Every time Jasper visited the Lancaster Residence, Lydia found a way to cause trouble. Even at school, the guys who hung around her–Quade, Maverick–were all unbearable.

So Jasper’s dislike of Lydia grew deeper and deeper.
But when did that start to change?
Maybe it was after Claudia turned 18 and left the Lancaster Residence. With the distance between them, the tension between the sisters slowly cooled.
Lydia stopped trying so hard to chase Jasper’s attention. One day, she came to him to apologize. She said she had acted out before because she’d felt insecure, living in that house alone with people who never truly accepted her.
She said she wanted to make peace with Claudia–that she’d even help speak in her favor to Wilson and Lottie.
At that time, Jasper had mixed feelings. He was happy that Claudia had finally escaped that miserable home, but he was also worried. His own parents often reminded him how hard life would be if he chose to stand by her.
So Lydia’s proposal sounded like the perfect solution.
Later, Jasper became good friends with Preston. And when Lydia started dating Preston, she reappeared in Jasper’s life–but this time from a completely different angle.
Without his old bias–and with Preston smoothing things over–Jasper began to realize that Lydia wasn’t the manipulative girl he thought she was. Maybe she was just a lonely orphan trying to survive in her own way.
When Claudia turned 20, it was actually Lydia who encouraged him to confess his feelings to
her.
For a short while, everything was beautiful. Their feelings were real, their love pure. But like a firework, it didn’t last.
After Preston died saving Jasper, things fell apart. Jasper had to hurt Claudia more than once because of Lydia’s illness. They had become lovers, but somehow ended up walking in opposite directions.
Jasper rubbed his temples, a headache pressing behind his eyes.
If there was one thing he was sure of now, it was this–he knew exactly what Claudia cared about. And because of that, he’d never help someone like Maverick.
