Because of that, no one dared order Sally around anymore. Out of pity, they all left her alone.

For the first time, Sally actually had a moment to breathe. But not long after Claudia walked away, she noticed a warm plate of barbecue sitting in front of her tent.

She froze for a long moment before quietly taking it inside.

Later that night, around 11, everyone gathered by the campfire to watch for shooting stars. They were all wrapped in thick jackets against the mountain chill.

Sally hesitated as she looked down at Claudia’s jacket, now stained from earlier. She wanted to return it and even planned to bring her own cheap coat as thanks. But when she stepped outside, she saw Claudia already wearing a guy’s jacket.

Sally wasn’t the only one who noticed. Lydia had just come out of her own tent, and her expression turned cold and sharp. From that look alone, Sally could guess whose jacket it was.

The next morning, as the group hiked down the mountain, Sally realized something.

“Claudia’s missing,” she said nervously.

Lydia barely glanced her way. “Claudia said she wanted to stay a bit longer. She told us to go ahead.”

What kind of girl would choose to stay alone in the woods?

Sally’s chest tightened with unease. She finally broke from her group and ran toward the class where Jasper was walking. Jasper and Claudia had grown up together, so if anyone would understand, it’d be him.

The moment he heard what Sally said, Jasper didn’t hesitate. He turned and started running back up the trail.

Lydia quickly stepped in front of him. “You know how dangerous it is to go alone! Jasper, don’t be reckless. Your parents wouldn’t want you risking your life.”

But Jasper just brushed her aside, cold and furious. His sharp gaze swept over her, making her flinch, and then he sprinted off without another word.

Lydia stood there, humiliated, her eyes burning like fire.

Sally, frightened by her expression, shrank back into the crowd.

They waited for hours at the bottom of the mountain, but neither Jasper nor Claudia returned.

It wasn’t until evening that they finally heard the news.

Claudia had gone to find Jasper after someone told her he was looking for her. But while she was searching, someone shoved her from behind, sending her tumbling into a pit.

By the time Jasper found her, she had just managed to climb out on her own. Her hands were covered in cuts, her ankle was swollen, and blood streaked her legs.

She had a lot of injuries—but she hadn’t cried once.

If Jasper hadn’t gone back for her, she probably would’ve limped her way out or tried to get help somehow.

Jasper, however, was furious and heartbroken. He carried her on his back all the way down the

mountain.

When they reached the bottom, everyone could see that he, too, was scraped and bleeding from rushing through the rough terrain.

Both of them were taken to the hospital.

Despite everyone’s objections, Claudia insisted on calling the police.

The investigation revealed that the one who pushed her was another girl from a different class -a student from an ordinary family. The girl claimed she only wanted to play a prank because Claudia had bullied her before, and she hadn’t meant for things to go that far.

Since the culprit was a minor, and the Lancasters had been told that Claudia might have started it, Lydia convinced her parents to “go easy” on the girl.

The girl apologized in front of everyone and transferred schools soon after. Just like that, the whole thing was swept under the rug.

The anger of a teenage girl meant nothing when faced with the power of adults.
