After the exam, Sally’s parents refused to pay her tuition. Even though her grades were good enough for a top university, they wanted her to start working right away. They even arranged a blind date with a man more than 10 years older than her.
That day, her classmates had planned to gather on the school field for a small get–together. She’d also wanted to talk to a teacher about her college application and the possibility of applying for a student loan. But her parents showed up and stopped her.
They said that even if she got into college, they’d go there and ruin everything for her.
If she didn’t listen, they had plenty of ways to make her life miserable.
Just the day before, they had beaten her again and taken all the money she had saved from her part–time jobs.
Sally had thought bitterly, “Other people’s parents try their best to lift their children higher, while mine just want to drag me into hell and even that’s not enough for them.”
She knew they were capable of doing it, too.
No matter how far she ran, unless they were dead, she’d never be free of them.
At that time, she’d felt completely defeated. She even thought that maybe she should just give in to them and rot away for the rest of her life.
She was spacing out the whole time they were on the field. A scary thought popped into her head. When she went home tonight, either she would die, or they would die. Only one of them could make it.
When the event on the field ended and the others headed to their next stop, she left on her

She opened her locker by the bleachers to grab her bag, only to find that it had been pried
open.
She suddenly laughed.
A thief? That thief must be really unlucky.
A prank? They have no idea that what I’m about to do is way crazier than any of their jokes.
But when she opened the locker, she froze.
On top of her old, worn–out backpack sat an envelope. The edge of a stack of red bills peeked

out, along with a small, messy note.
:.
“Keep moving forward. I hope your future shines bright.”
Sally stood there for a long time. She smiled, then she cried.

That night, her eyes swollen from crying, she picked up a wine bottle from the trash. Using one of the hundred–dollar bills, she bought a few bottles of cheap, strong alcohol from the supermarket and poured them into the wine bottle. Then she took it home and tricked her parents, saying it was expensive foreign wine that a rich classmate had bought–and that she’d brought the leftovers home.
She acted like she was heartbroken and ready to get married, just what they wanted.
Sure enough, her parents were thrilled. For the wedding gifts they’d soon receive, they drank one glass after another in excitement.
Her parents had no real skills, but they were both heavy drinkers. She didn’t even need to convince them.
Even her younger brother, who was two years younger, was tricked into drinking a few glasses.
That night, she stole all the family’s official papers and the cash they hadn’t put in the bank.
She used her brother’s fingerprint to unlock his new phone, replaced the SIM card, and changed the password.
Before she left, she slapped each of them hard.
Her brother wasn’t as drunk and woke
But he thought he was dreaming. How could his weak, good–for–nothing sister dare to hit him?
Sally left the house and went straight to the airport.
