Back then, Sally had left in such a rush that she didn’t dare contact anyone. She had wiped away every trace of her past clean.
From Claudia’s point of view, it must have looked like she took her money and disappeared, not even showing up at college.
She couldn’t imagine how disappointed she must have been.
When Sally apologized and handed her an envelope just like the one from years ago, Claudia didn’t refuse it.
She knew that if she accepted it, Sally would feel better.
What she didn’t tell her was that the money she’d given back then was the very same money she’d saved to escape from the Lancasters.
She never told anyone about it, but Jasper and Whitney had known all along.
After Sally disappeared, her parents came to the school and caused a scene a few times. Everyone thought something bad had happened. People started speculating that she’d been kidnapped, trafficked, or worse. Everyone had a different theory.
But the three of them thought she must have left on her own.
Jasper was very upset, thinking that Sally had just taken the money and disappeared without a word after everything Claudia had done for her.
What made it worse was that because Claudia had given that money to Sally, she herself had a hard time after leaving the Lancasters.
Wilson and Lottie had even gone out of their way to warn their well–connected friends not to let their children help her, hoping to force her into coming home.
Later, she found part–time work on her own, and Whitney secretly sold a few things to slip her some money. Somehow, she made it through those first difficult months and slowly got back on her feet.
Claudia never regretted what she did.
Just like she never believed Sally had run away with the money.
The reason she wanted to go to the class reunion was not to confront her, but to see with her own eyes that she was doing okay.

She believed that a hardworking girl who refused to bow to fate deserved a life she could truly call her own.
No matter how bad her situation had been, at least her family wasn’t as heartless as the Tuckers.
“Are you staying abroad for good?”
Seeing her old friend and seeing that she was doing better than she had expected, made Claudia feel more at ease.
They didn’t dwell on the past with any emotional speeches. A simple “thank you” and “it’s okay” was enough to wipe the slate clean.
Sally shook her head, determination lighting up her eyes. “I’m planning to move back. I want to build a team and make a real movie.”
She had already planned the theme and story. She wanted to show the world what it meant to be a girl from the bottom, struggling yet shining.
Claudia smiled and said, “I wish you success.”
Sally laughed. “Your blessings always work.”
Just as they were about to talk more, Claudia’s phone rang.
Seeing the name on the screen, she smiled and said to Sally, “Sorry, I have to take this call.”
Sally nodded in understanding.
She was about to go find Eunice to thank her as well when she heard someone call her name.
“Sally?”
She turned around and was surprised to see Jasper.
So, the phone call Claudia just answered with such a sweet smile was from him?
Sally raised her eyebrow.
Jasper looked at her with surprise and excitement. “This is great! Can you do me a favor?”
