Claudia grabbed Whitney by the shoulders and spun her around for a look. “You haven’t lost any weight at all. Looks like things are going even better here than I expected.”
Whitney lifted her chin. “Of course! You think your best friend is some useless airhead? I’ve got all the Marvonians wrapped around my finger. I’ll be back in Dracovia before the year’s even up.”
She had made a bet with her father to increase the overseas branch’s profits by 30% before the year was out.
She had already crushed that goal.
The only reason she was still in Marvonia was her own ambition. She wanted full control here, and she planned to double the profits while she was at it.
Airports aren’t really great for catching up, so they tossed their luggage in the car and got ready to head out. Whitney kept talking, “My place isn’t far from the theater where Florence’s troupe rehearses. There’s no need for you to move around. Just stay with me. I even got you a car. You can just drive yourself over each day.”
Claudia nodded. “Then I’ll tell Sterling he doesn’t have to arrange a driver.”
Whitney nearly choked on her own saliva. “A driver?”
She gave Claudia a look and said, “Well, well, the golden boy of the Romeros really does go all out, huh?”
She had forgotten Sterling had his own network abroad.
Truth was, she just didn’t have time to drive Claudia everywhere herself, and she didn’t trust anyone else. That gave Sterling the perfect excuse to flaunt his influence.
“Fine. Keep that driver Sterling arranged for you. In a new city, having a driver is safer than driving yourself. The car I got can just be for our road trips.”
Then she shot Claudia a look. “What else did he set up for you?”
Claudia smiled. “Nothing much. Just a few bodyguards.”
Actually, Sterling had arranged for a villa and even local guides, but Claudia came just to see Whitney, so she never planned on staying anywhere else. She even turned down the hotel that Florence’s team booked for her near the theater.
As for the biggest piece of “luggage“-Sterling himself–she made sure he stayed home.

After coming back from Estropa, then spending days off the grid at Serenity Peaks, if she let Sterling follow her out of the country again, she figured Clint would probably riot at Romero Corp headquarters.
Besides, what’s the point of a girls‘ trip if she brought her man along?
As for the bodyguards, they were mostly there in case she ran into Preston.
Thinking of that, she asked, “When did you see Preston?”
Whitney snorted. “A few days ago. It was at some masquerade ball.”
At first, he just looked familiar to Whitney.
Preston was supposed to have died years ago—and in a pretty dramatic way, too. Nobody would expect someone presumed dead to suddenly reappear.
She only recognized him when a rich woman at the party pulled off his mask and kissed him behind a pillar.
