Preston was friends with Jasper, so when he heard about the trip, he wanted to come along too.
At the time, Preston was an important member of Jasper’s project, and they had a personal relationship. Jasper couldn’t turn him down, so he agreed.
What started as a trip for two ended up turning into a group outing. What he didn’t expect was that Preston would bring Lydia along.
Instead of cheering Claudia up, that trip just cast a shadow of death over her and Jasper.
Preston played his part perfectly.
Even Whitney and Claudia, who never liked Lydia, couldn’t find anything bad to say about Preston.
The only thing they could complain about was his terrible taste in women for falling for someone as manipulative as Lydia.
When the accident happened that day, Preston not only saved his own girlfriend, Lydia, but also rescued several others. In the end, he died of exhaustion trying to save Jasper.
That made everyone think of him as practically a saint.
Later, when the Fentons wanted to switch daughters–in–law and the Lancasters wanted someone to take care of their heartbroken daughter, they pushed Jasper to pretend to be Preston for Lydia’s sake. People who knew the truth couldn’t blame them.
Claudia was the only one who got guilt–tripped into keeping quiet. She couldn’t even show jealousy or speak up for herself without being accused of being heartless.
Because Lydia was so devastated by Preston’s “death,” the Lancasters ended up blaming Claudia, too. In the end, their relationships fell apart.
No one knew how much Claudia suffered during that time.
She had already cut ties with the Lancasters, but still couldn’t escape getting pulled back into their mess.
In the end, Preston hadn’t died at all.
Whitney didn’t believe it was just a coincidence. Her first thought was that Lydia must have been behind it.
She always found it odd–Lydia had been all over Jasper in high school, so why would she

suddenly fall for a guy like Preston? After all, aside from his family background, Preston didn’t have much else going for him.
Given how opportunistic Lydia was, Whitney never believed she could actually love anyone that much.
But after watching them for a while, Whitney realized the two of them genuinely seemed inseparable, and she wondered if she’d just been paranoid.
After all, Lydia and Preston started dating before Jasper and Claudia did.
Now that she looked back, everything made sense.
From day one, Lydia’s romance with Preston was a setup to separate Jasper and Claudia.
Even Preston’s gentlemanly, laid–back personality was an act. He was into all kinds of extreme sports, which fit perfectly with how everything played out.
Whitney clenched her teeth. “That woman is absolutely ruthless.”
Claudia pressed her lips together.
But truthfully, she felt much calmer than she’d expected.
Maybe Preston was the beginning of her and Jasper falling apart, but what happened in the end was never just about him.
Maybe Jasper started taking care of Lydia because he felt guilty or was pressured by both families and public opinion. But when he kept choosing Lydia over Claudia again and again, maybe he really started to enjoy that kind of forbidden and dangerous relationship.
And after being with Sterling, Claudia finally realized what it really meant for someone to put
her first.
If anyone ever tried to use saving Sterling’s life to blackmail him into hurting Claudia, he’d give them money or favors if they weren’t too greedy. But if they pushed him to hurt Claudia, he’d immediately see them as a threat and make sure they paid for it, no matter what they’d done for him.
Claudia didn’t want to go back and think about what would have happened if Preston hadn’t been in the picture. That was in the past now.
