Chapter 258 Cruel Reminder
Finished
After Claudia turned six, Lottie started seeing her as a way to make up for her own mistakes.
She often thought her life went wrong the day Wilson came to her house and mistook her for Zocy. She knew who he was–Zoey’s date–but she kept quiet.
Ever since they were kids, Lottie had always been the one who came up short.
Zoey was smarter, smoother, and better at making people like her.
The day before she met Wilson, she’d fought with Zoey.
Wilson didn’t recognize Zoey, but Lottie knew the truth–Zoey had feelings for him for a long time.
But her pride wouldn’t let her tell anyone about it.
She found out from Zoey’s diary by accident.
Out of spite, she’d thought, Everyone loves her so much. Fine, then I’ll take the guy she loves.
And maybe it worked because Wilson did seem to like her better–she was pretty, gentle, and a little sneaky in a way men found cute. Her plan worked too well.
Zoey was crushed.
She couldn’t stand losing to her own sister–the one she’d always thought was beneath her.
So, out of anger, she rushed to marry another man, one who looked good but was awful inside.
That one choice ruined everything.
She fell apart, and her daughter suffered with her.
Lottie had carried that guilt for years. She knew she had a hand in Zoey’s sad life.
Claudia’s grandma used to call her foolish.
And she was–too kind to be truly bad, too soft to make things right.
She couldn’t live in peace, not after Zoey died saving Claudia.
Every time Lottie tried to be kind to Claudia, she couldn’t help but see Zoey–covered in blood, staring back at her in her mind. It was like a cruel reminder of her own sins.

She tried to ease her guilt by pouring it all onto the next generation–onto the two girls.
She spoiled Lydia endlessly while pushing Claudia aside again and again.
Pinoshed
Maybe, at first, she still felt bad about it. Maybe she pitied Claudia. But over time, her heart shifted for real–she began to love Lydia as if she were her own daughter.
Even the love that once belonged to Claudia, she gave it all to Lydia instead.
People outside said she’d lost her mind. But only she knew the truth–she was paying for the mistakes of her past.
The tragedy was, her daughter ended up taking all the punishment for her.
From start to finish, Claudia was the only one who had done nothing wrong.
Clarence sat in silence for a long time, then gently wiped the tears off Lottie’s face. “Mom, the past is already gone. You can’t keep trapping yourself in it.”
Lottie suddenly grabbed his hand, her voice trembling. “Clarence, let’s bring Claudia home, okay? I’ll make it right this time. I’ll be a good mom again–the kind I was before she turned six.”
Her voice was soft and desperate–it hurt just to hear her say it.
Clarence squeezed her hand back. “It’ll get better, Mom.”
He was lying.
He knew things wouldn’t get better.
