Shallered Rose He Held On Light
Chapter 263 Uncertain Future

She had used the last few months of her life, stepping on Lottie’s child, to rewrite her own daughter’s fate.
Did Lydia know?
Most likely, yes.
But she couldn’t accept that her mother had died because of her, so she went along and blamed Claudia instead.
Carrying out her mother’s last wishes, she poured all her effort into draining Claudia’s life, as if crushing her into the dust could make her mother’s plan feel complete.
Even years later, she used the same tricks again.
For more than ten years, everyone got what they wanted–except Claudia.
Sterling had collected all the evidence. He found the driver’s family and the doctor who had treated Lottie at the time. There were witnesses and physical proof.
With Preston, whom Claudia had detained, he could expose the mother–daughter duo’s true nature to the world at any moment.
Claudia realized that facing the truth now, she could stay calm.
All those nights and days she had spent doubting herself, struggling, and feeling guilty–she wasn’t a child unworthy of love.
She hadn’t hurt anyone or done anything wrong.
Her resistance, her fight back, wasn’t a crime.
So… should she forgive the Lancasters?
Claudia felt that maybe she had inherited some of the Lancasters’s darkness.
She didn’t want to forgive them.
Even if they had been deceived and misled.
Even someone as cruel as Zoey could give everything for her daughter and fall straight into
hell.
But her own parents, her own family, had kept pushing her deeper into suffering.

If even once they had stood up for her–if they had been willing to share the blame when she or her sister did something wrong, instead of joining outsiders in putting her down–maybe she could have held on to a shred of warmth today.
One Lydia could never destroy her life.
The ones willing to sacrifice her were her own family.
Wasn’t that exactly what Zoey had counted on to make her plan succeed?
So… should Claudia reveal what Lydia and her mother had done?
Of course she would.
But just letting them cry, feel regret, or make excuses that they’d been tricked–would that comfort her in any way?
Not nearly enough.
She wanted them to feel what she had felt: the pain of being stabbed in the back by those closest to you, of being misunderstood, of being betrayed, of living through the darkest moments with no one to rely on.
How could anyone truly understand that pain?
Since they couldn’t, she’d make them experience it firsthand.
Sterling kissed her forehead. “Many things don’t need you to do them yourself. They’ll face the consequences on their own.”
All they had to do was watch, push things along, and step aside–just like the Lancasters did when Lydia did her dirty work–occasionally tip the scales in her favor.
Their fingers intertwined as they held each other tightly.
The day Lydia got out of prison, the weather was perfect.
She stood at the gate, shading her eyes from the sun.
After months in a cramped, dark cell, the sunlight felt almost too bright.
