Lydia was completely unaware of Jasper’s mood and cheerfully opened the box. “You came at the perfect time. Look what I found!”
“I was going through some old things the other day and realized this set of mugs is still in perfect shape. How about we each keep one?”
Mugs?
Looking at the cartoon cat–and–dog mugs, Jasper finally remembered. He’d once given Claudia a mug just like that. It was a souvenir he’d brought back from Iskoria on a business trip.
Claudia had loved it.
But later, Lydia accidentally broke the mug.
Claudia got upset, and they argued. The whole Lancaster family blamed Claudia for making a big deal out of nothing, just because of a mug.
Claudia, upset and frustrated, came to vent to him. He was just worried Lydia might get sick from all the fuss, so he brushed Claudia off. “It’s just a mug. I’ll buy you another one.”
It’s just a mug.
It’s just a pair of cufflinks.
Those two sentences were hauntingly similar.
He forgot that it was never just about the mug. It was about the feelings and the memories attached to it.
Thinking back now, he suddenly remembered how the light went out in Claudia’s eyes at that
moment.
She thought he’d treasure their gifts as much as she did.
Turned out, it was just wishful thinking on her part.
What happened after that?
He’d gone on another business trip, passed through a little town famous for porcelain making. So, he wanted to make it up to Claudia by crafting a new mug himself.

Lydia happened to be performing nearby and got interested, too.

The two of them ended up making mugs together. They made three mugs together, one for Claudia, one for Lydia, and one for Jasper.
After they got home, Claudia saw the mug from Jasper, and she got another one from Lydia, too. Lydia molded the mug to make it look like the one Jasper had brought from Iskoria. After learning that they crafted the mugs together, Claudia just laughed.
She smashed Lydia’s gift, shoved aside the one made by Jasper, and told them both to get out.
That led to another argument between Claudia and Jasper.
By then, Claudia barely spoke to Jasper anymore. It was the distance between them that made Jasper start planning a proposal in a panic.
He never took that set of mugs with him. Turns out, Lydia kept them.
The gifts that had once seemed full of love now felt like nothing but a cruel joke.
He let out a cold laugh. “Do you even remember who those were supposed to be for?”
Lydia’s smile faltered.
“I just thought, since Claudia doesn’t want them anymore, it’d be a waste to throw them away.”
She closed the box. “Forget it. If you don’t like them, I’ll just get rid of them.”
She glanced at Jasper, trying to change the subject. “I heard you and William got into a fight. What happened?”
She frowned in disapproval. “He’s just an illegitimate child. Why is he even allowed here?”
Jasper stared her down. “Because my father wants to hand the Fenton family over to him.”
Lydia’s eyes widened. She blurted out, “That can’t be right.”
She’d missed so much while in prison. After she got out, most of her old friends cut her off, so she was always the last to know anything.
She had always thought rumors about a new Fenton heir were just gossip.
