Right now, all Jasper wanted was a place where no one could find him. Somewhere completely silent, where no one could gossip about him.

Except for a few maids he passed on the way, he made it up to the rooftop without any trouble.

As always, the rooftop was deserted. There were no locks, no railings, just empty open space.

He sat right on the edge, his legs dangling off the side, his hands braced on either side to steady himself.

Up here, with nothing between him and the sky, it felt like he was the only person left in the world.

There was no barriers and no railings. The wind blew hard, giving him the strange feeling he could be swept away at any moment.

When he came here with Claudia, he always felt light, happy, and free.

But sitting here alone, all he could feel was endless loneliness and emptiness.

She said she used to come here often. Was this what she felt, too?

Jasper glanced down, his mind spinning. For a second, his thoughts drifted, and he nearly lost his balance and tumbled right off.

The fear of falling snapped him awake.

He scrambled away from the ledge, then stopped, looking back at the spot he’d just been.

In his mind, he saw a boy and a girl sitting together, laughingthen suddenly the image changed to a lonely girl in a dress. She stared up at the sky, her long hair streaming in the wind.

It looked like she could be swept away at any moment.

He wanted to yell at her to move away, but the image vanished in a heartbeat.

Jasper dropped to his knees, clutching his chest, and pressed his forehead to the cold floor.

His eyes were bloodshot, tears spilling out as his laughter shifted from selfmockery to utter regret.

All those times, while everyone else in the family was enjoying themselves downstairs, had she ever thought about jumping?

She was just a teenager back then.

She’d even brought him up here before, so why hadn’t he noticed anything?

He always claimed to love her, but what had he ever actually done for her?

For his own peace of mind, he kept pushing her to forgive the Lancasters, and he ended up hurting her over and over.

He had never realized how brave and strong she’d been, walking away from the Lancasters all on her own.

He’d never once reached out to help her when she needed it most.

Without warning, he slapped himself hard across the face.

Jasper Fenton! You deserve this! Ha! You really do!

Neither the Lancasters nor he himself deserved happiness.

Lottie tore her gaze away from the entrance, looking miserable.

Wilson walked over and put an arm around her shoulders. What’s wrong?

Lottie managed a weak smile. Claudia probably isn’t coming.”

Wilson fell silent.

It wasn’t that he didn’t love Claudia as a daughter.

But after years of being at odds, he no longer knew how to love her.

He actually understood Lydia better than Claudia now.

The sweet, gentle little girl from his memories was nothing but a blur now.
