At the same time, he felt stifled. If any other family had ended up with an adopted daughter who’d been to prison, they probably wouldn’t have treated her much better.
But everyone was quick to judge, and some were clearly here just for the drama.
Lydia was nothing but trouble for them.
“Forget it,” Wilson muttered, shaking off those messy thoughts. “Let’s cut the cake. Everyone’s waiting for you.”
Lottie let out a sigh and nodded, following him behind.
From the outside, the five members of the Lancaster family–Wilson, Lottie, and their two sons and a daughter–looked like the perfect picture of a happy family.
Lydia tried hard to ignore all the judgmental, mocking, and scornful looks aimed at her.
No matter what, she was the Lancasters‘ daughter now. From the moment she’d set foot in the house, Claudia’s spot had become hers.
But just as the polite words were finished and the cake was about to be cut, one of the Lancasters‘ maids burst into the room, stumbling over herself, her face full of panic.
“Mr. Lancaster! Mrs. Lancaster! Ms. Claudia’s here with a gift!”
Lottie’s face lit up with surprise.
Wilson’s mood lifted, too. “Is she here alone, or did anyone else come with her?”
Then he frowned at the maid’s clumsiness. “If Ms. Claudia’s back, just bring her in. What’s all the fuss about?”
The maid’s lips quivered, fear still written all over her face. “But, but … ”

“For a party thrown by a family that abuses its own child and turns a blind eye to her suffering, it doesn’t deserve Ms. Lancaster to show up in person,” a male voice cut in from the doorway.
Clint stepped into view, dressed in a black suit.
Behind him came a large group dressed in black shirts and pants, looking like they were on their way to a funeral. They pulled out all the classic funeral instruments and played a lively tune as they marched into the middle of the crowd.

While the guests gasped and whispered, Lottie’s eyes locked onto the person leading the procession.
He was holding a giant black–and–white portrait.
The smiling face in the photo belonged to someone she knew all too well–it was Lydia’s mother, her own sister, Zoey.
Her heart pounded in her chest. Her face went pale.
Clint looked at Lottie with a mocking smile. “Mrs. Lancaster, even though Ms. Lancaster has cut ties with you, you’re still mother and daughter. She specifically told me to bring you a very special present for your birthday.”
Wilson was furious and shocked. “No matter how upset she is with the family, she shouldn’t be ruining her mother’s birthday party like this.”
Showing up with a black–and–white photo like this–what point is she trying to make?
Clint shook his head. “For the last 17 years, every birthday Ms. Lancaster had in this house was more like a memorial. Today is just a reminder of what she had endured over the years. What’s so hard to accept?”
He pretended to be deep in thought. “Or maybe you think this isn’t enough? Maybe every single one of you needs to experience what it’s like to spend your birthday in mourning. Maybe you need to experience it 17 times, just to even the score. If that’s what you want, I’m sure Mr. Romero and Ms. Lancaster wouldn’t mind paying for the band.”
As if on cue, the band played their funeral music even louder.
The mourning tune filled the air with grief.
Wilson was too angry to speak, but also too scared to argue.
He knew, deep down, if he pushed back, Claudia and Sterling would really see it through.
