“Wait for me to come home,” he said, kissing her on the forehead.

“Hold on,” Claudia called after him, straightening his tie. “Okay, now go work hard, got it?”

And preferably, stop thinking about nonsense–and stop bothering me.

Sterling chuckled. “Yes, ma’am. Anything else, sweetheart?”

“Yeah. Bring me a box of mini croissants from that bakery near your office.”

“Got it.”

Breakfast dragged on for an hour, full of small talk and lazy affection, before Sterling finally left for work.

Clint let out a long sigh of relief when he walked in.

Who could understand? Back when Sterling basically lived at the office, Clint used to curse his boss for being a workaholic.

But ever since he started dating, he’d gone to the opposite extreme–never on time, and itching to clock out the moment the clock hit five.

As a mere regular assistant, Clint had to carry way more than he should.

Still… when he thought about the string of zeroes in his yearly salary-

“Mr. Romero,” Clint said, handing him a file, “the Emosa’s Project has drawn attention. A review team’s just been formed.”

That project was the one Winnie’s second brother, Julian, brought to Romero Corp, hoping to co–develop it with Sterling.

With the Lloyd Group’s strength, they shouldn’t have been able to compete with Romero Corp. In the end, Julian only landed it through Corbin’s connections–barely.

He got the deal but couldn’t handle it, and Sterling could’ve taken advantage of that.

Sterling picked up the file and glanced through it, his eyes showing that signature coldness he was known for.

“Good job,” he said evenly. “Tell them there’s no rush. Slow things down. Don’t rush anything. People make the dumbest moves when they’re under pressure. The more desperate they get, the easier it’ll be for them to screw up.”

He’d never wanted that project to begin with.

Something they fought tooth and nail to win would draw no suspicion, right?

The trap had been set long ago—he was just waiting for the Lloyds to trigger it themselves.

“There’s one more thing,” said Clint after finishing the Lloyds report. “It’s about the Lancasters..

“Lydia’s out of danger now, but it seems she’s not on good terms with them anymore.”

A mocking smile tugged at Sterling’s lips. “Don’t get involved. Let them tear each other apart. Just keep an eye on them.”

He thought back to that night when Claudia had said she’d once thought about ending everything, and his chest tightened. As far as he was concerned, the Lancasters could die a hundred times, and it still wouldn’t be enough.

He wouldn’t go out of his way to destroy them–after all, they’d given birth to Claudia.

But the price they owed? They’d pay it in full.

“Yes, sir.” Clint lowered his eyes, sighing inwardly. Back then, when Ms. Lancaster was still around, the Lancasters had seemed so close, so loving.

How did a few cracks turn their so–called family bond into dust? Mr. Romero hadn’t even gone all out yet.
