Chapter 312 Zane’s Regret
Being foolish is bad. Being ignorant is bad, too.

Among the three children in the family, he was different. He wasn’t like Clarence, who carried the family’s reputation, held all the power, but also had to live under insane expectations. He wasn’t like Lydia, who always had to act carefully and plan every move just to keep her place. And he definitely wasn’t like Claudia, who, smart and tough as she was, had the misfortune of carrying the moral weight of her mother’s mistake from a young age.
His simple and careless nature often made others jealous.
Lydia looked up to Clarence and always wanted to be near him.
She knew that no matter how hard she worked, she could never replace him as the family heir.
Her feelings toward Claudia were much more complicated.
Claudia was the first person who had ever hugged her, the first to share candy. But that same kindness made Lydia feel her own flaws more sharply. Even worse, her mother had given up her life to make things easier for her. In her twisted way of thinking, Lydia believed that only if Claudia suffered the pain that was meant for her could she truly stay happy.
She hated Claudia’s strength and stubbornness, but secretly, she admired her wild spirit and the way she loved life without fear.
As for Zane, just because he was a boy, he easily got everything Lydia and Claudia could never reach.
He was spoiled, childish, reckless, and never took things seriously. Still, his parents loved him with no limits.
Sometimes, Lydia couldn’t help but wonder. If Claudia had never existed, and her mother had chosen Zane back then, would he have gotten all this so easily?
Probably not.
Wilson and Lottie acted like they loved their daughter deeply, but it was more like how people love a pet–something nice to have, but easy to let go of.
But for their son, they gave everything they had.
Lydia understood how easy Zane was to manipulate.

Sure enough, with just a few kind words and a little comfort, his empty heart would swell, and his feelings for Claudia would start to shift, little by little.
In the end, he only looked clueless on the outside. Deep down, he was selfish, too.
When his parents and brother started treating the new sister better, he simply copied their behavior.
Lydia never yelled at him or pointed out his mistakes, so he thought she was the nicest person
ever.
Honestly, before everything changed, it was Claudia—his sister who had once been spoiled until she was six–who acted more like a sister than the busy and cold Clarence ever did.
There was a kind of childish cruelty in Zane.
Every time Lydia used him to hurt Claudia, she felt both thrilled and disgusted.
This fool had an easier life than any of them.
She was even secretly glad that Zane wasn’t her biological brother. If he were, and he still chose to hurt his own family for some outsider, she’d probably kill him herself.
When Lydia said those words, Zane was completely shocked.
He never realized that the gentle, kind Lydia had been hiding so much anger and bitterness toward him.
He wanted to explain himself, but no words came out.
Then memories rushed through his mind, so fast that his head felt like it was about to burst.
He remembered when he fell as a kid and Claudia had come to help him up–but he had thrown a toy at her instead. Back then, he thought he was protecting Lydia, who’d cried that night over missing her mom, Zoey. He’d even called Claudia a “troublemaker.” He remembered when Claudia stayed up all night at their grandmother’s wake. But because she had hit Lydia earlier, he caught a snake that night just to scare Claudia. He remembered the year Claudia left the family–how he had called her fake and manipulative, swearing he’d never recognize her as his sister again.
Zane clutched his head, tears mixing with the pain.
