He leaned in, breath warm at her ear. “So, Ms. Wallace–between a useless nobody and the heir of a powerful family with a bright future … which one do you pick?”
Lydia went rigid.
What is he hinting at?
One hand pressed to the fresh wound in her abdomen, she eased back a fraction, paling, dodging his closeness.
That fragile recoil–an almost inviting look–made her look like a bruised bloom begging to be plucked.
The Wallaces had good genes. From daughters Zoey and Lottie down to the granddaughters, beauty bred true.
William smiled.
He caught Lydia’s chin between his fingers. “Well, Ms. Wallace, ever think about choosing me instead? A Fenton daughter–in–law doesn’t have to be tied to Jasper. What I can give you beats anything he can.”
A flicker of murk and disgust crossed Lydia’s eyes.
But when William leaned in again, still carrying another woman’s scent, she didn’t move.
Her nails bit her palm. She shut her eyes.
The kiss didn’t land.
Fingers clamped hard on her jaw. Her eyes flew open into William’s mocking stare.
Triumph lit his gaze–along with the tiniest disappointment. “My oh–so–talented, spoiled- from–birth Jasper never did have much taste, did he?”
He gave her cheek a patronizing tap, bored with himself. “You didn’t really think I wanted you, did you? Everyone knows you’re at war with Sterling’s future wife. You seriously think you’re worth me offending Sterling over you?
“Only Jasper is that naïve. Dumped his childhood sweetheart to ‘protect‘ you, and look how that turned out. Tsk.”

A man that rotten, and somehow he still looked down on her.
Heat of humiliation flushed Lydia’s face. She swung at him.
He caught her mid–strike.

“Easy.” His grip tightened on her wrist. “You’ve been here often enough to know this office is under surveillance. What do you say I send the footage to Jasper–let him enjoy the highlight reel?”
Her pupils blew wide.
One reckless moment, and she’d stepped into a bigger trap.
She steadied, forcing the urge to kill back down. “If you’re going to do it, do it. Spare me the monologue. What do you want?”
William laughed. Not entirely stupid, then.
He released her and dropped into his chair. “Nothing dramatic. I’m offering you a hand. You do know Jasper’s mother is shopping for a new fiancée, right?”
Sasha’s flawlessly made–up face flashed through Lydia’s mind, and a weight settled on her chest.
