“No, I just…

He couldn’t finish his words. How could he admit that what he really wanted was to climb higher, so that when she and Sterling eventually broke up, he’d be strong enough to win her back?
Claudia shrugged. “Let me ask you this. If we were still together today, but William still showed. up and I had already broken ties with the Lancasters while your father told you to choose between the family business and me, which one would you pick? Or would you try to marry the person they chose while still stringing me along?”
Jasper gave no answer.
The teenage Jasper would have immediately answered Claudia, but could the adult Jasper still honestly give the same answer?
Claudia shook her head.
That was the difference between Jasper and Sterling.
If it were Sterling standing in front of her, he would’ve said without hesitation that he’d take both.
Because to Sterling, having power and status meant protecting her better. Having a rightful name meant she could stand tall beside him.
It was never a choice between one or the other, because he’d never put her on a scale.
The truth was, Jasper could never truly separate himself from the Fentons. He relied on his father to survive in that world.
Jasper wanted everything, but he’d always start by sacrificing her. He couldn’t say it out loud, but that was who he was.
But Sterling was different. He’d fight for whatever he wanted, even if that meant taking it by force, clearing every obstacle himself, and proudly handing her the peace she deserved.
She and Jasper were never right for each other.
No matter how fate twisted, their personalities would always pull them apart.
Realizing what she was implying, Jasper slumped his shoulders in defeat.

Just then, someone walked past them and accidentally bumped into Claudia.
She stumbled forward.
Jasper instinctively reached out to steady her, but Claudia quickly dodged.
He looked hurt and said, “Even if we aren’t a couple, we’ve known each other for so many years. Can’t we be friends in the future?”
Claudia widened her eyes, giving him a look that screamed, “Do you even know what you’re saying?”
Did he really think one apology could wipe everything clean?
Being friends with an ex? That’s so gross and he actually suggested it.
She shouldn’t have waited for Sterling there. This whole thing was crap.
Jasper tried to say something but he remembered Sterling’s warning and stepped back.
He should be happy that they even ran into each other and talked.
“They seem to be getting along quite well. I heard that first loves are the hardest to forget. Mr. Romero, do you think Claudia can really forget Jasper, who used to be her lover and act like her brother?”
At the deck entrance, Lydia appeared next to Sterling, watching Claudia and Jasper. From their angle, Jasper and Claudia looked very close–almost intimate.
Sterling lowered his gaze and stared at Lydia, who was trying to sound casual but couldn’t hide her jealousy.
What a night, running into all kinds of weirdos.
“Ms. Wallace, if you still can’t get Jasper’s attention, people will actually look down on you.”
