After a lifetime of pride, Winnic had finally tasted what it felt like to be crushed, spine shattered, family ruined.

“Your brother’s a lucky man.”
Tammy Ferguson, the woman of the hour, had walked over to Simon, who’d been quietly watching the drama unfold near the entrance.
Winnie had come targeting Sterling, but before he even said a word, Claudia had calmly stepped in and blocked her, firmly, but not cruelly. The way she shielded him, without hesitation, was something people could only envy.
In a family like theirs, finding someone who loved you wholeheartedly without calculating personal gain, and having it be someone you also loved? That kind of luck was rare.
Simon glanced at Sterling, who was now gently ruffling Claudia’s hair, his usual coldness gone, replaced by something warm. It was hard to tell if Simon was agreeing or simply thinking aloud, “Sterling’s always been lucky.”
“I’m pretty lucky too,” Tammy said with a smile, slipping her arm through his.
Simon paused, then smiled as well, and reached up to brush a hand lightly through her hair.
Meanwhile, Sterling and Claudia had made their way over to Donovan.
“Mr. Donovan. Long time no see,” Sterling greeted casually.
Donovan gave a dry chuckle, forcing some politeness. “All good. Glad you’re here. Go on and sit down, no need to help out today.”
Claudia looked up at him with wide eyes, lashes fluttering innocently. “Really? But I want to help! How about I go keep an eye on things for Yvonne?”
Donovan’s smile faltered. “No need. Emma and the girls were just looking for you.”
He glanced at Sterling, his tone laced with unspoken meaning. “It’s boring around here. Why don’t you take Claudia over and let her hang out with them?”

Sterling didn’t say a word, he just smiled down at Claudia, eyes soft, and hooked his pinky finger with hers.
Claudia pouted. “Okay, okay. Mr. Donovan clearly doesn’t want to chat with me. I’ll just go find Emma and the others.”
Then she muttered to herself with a mock sigh, “Not like it matters. The younger crowd’s way more fun than an old grump playing favorites anyway.”
Donovan stayed silent.
At events like this, Sterling was bound to get held up with social obligations–polite small talk, endless flattery, people trying to curry favor. Claudia found it all dull, so she ditched him and went off to find some fun of her own.
She only realized there was a familiar face in the mix after she found Emma.
A few of the younger guests were gathered around someone in the center, all excitedly asking questions–what made the insects in Loscoqua different from the ones back home? Which species were the most aggressive? And could he tell what kind of weird little pet they had just by looking at it?
“Long time no see,” said Frederick, his clear–cut features softened with a smile.
Claudia blinked, a little surprised. “Your research in Loscoqua’s done already?”
Frederick shook his head. “Just on a short break. I came back to bring my mom home for her recovery.”
Fiona’s heart transplant had gone well, but her body was still frail. She’d told them she wanted to return to her home country to recover, and Waylon had brought her back without hesitation.
As it happened, they’d arrived just in time for Simon’s engagement. Since the family had already made a formal appearance once before, Donovan had invited them back again.
When people get older, the desire to win power games fades. They just want to see their family together and at peace.
Claudia raised an eyebrow. “Where are Waylon and Fiona?”
Frederick smiled. “Too noisy in here. My dad took her to the lounge to rest.”
