The moment their skin touched, she could feel it–his shaking, the way his body leaned instinctively toward her, then froze, holding back. Her heart sank.

Yvonne scanned the room quickly. When her eyes landed on the bathroom door–shut, lights off–she quietly let out a breath.

No one else seemed to be there. No compromising scene. Could’ve been worse.

“Locked himself in and started self–harming during his own engagement party?” Sterling’s voice was calm, but cold.

A proper, gentlemanly groom, supposedly mature and collected, now found half–dead on the floor? Everyone in the room looked like they had a thousand questions hanging over their heads.

More than a few people snuck glances at Sterling.

The timing, the setting, and the optics. Was it possible Sterling didn’t want Simon, who was actually a decent match, tying the knot with the Fergusons?

Claudia, standing beside Sterling, stepped forward slightly to shield him from the probing stares. “If something’s bothering you, Simon, you could’ve just talked to us. Sterling and I would’ve helped you figure it out. There’s no need to hurt yourself,” she said gently.

Yvonne’s mind was spinning, already trying to come up with an excuse, but before she could say anything, Simon cut her off.

He was still struggling to stay upright, his body tense, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. Yet, somehow, he still managed a faint smile.

“I’m sorry. This is my issue,” he said calmly.

Tammy’s hand tightened around his.

But he simply looked at her, eyes soft, and slowly pulled his hand away. He lowered his gaze, lashes trembling. “I’m sorry, Tammy … but we should cancel the wedding.”

The room exploded. Gasps, murmurs, and stunned silence. All at once.

Tammy bit her lip, eyes going red, staring at him like she’d just been slapped. She needed an answer, a reason. Anything.

The Fergusons, on the other hand, looked like they were about to charge into the room.

He was the one who chased her, and now he was the one pulling out in front of everyone. How was Tammy supposed to hold her head up after this?

Yvonne parted her lips, as if to speak.

But when her eyes caught the image of Claudia and Sterling standing side by side, unharmed, unshaken, she lowered her head.

She understood what Simon meant.

Her silence, though, only made it look like she supported Simon’s decision to call off the engagement, and that made the Fergusons even angrier.

Donovan’s face was like stone. “Simon, the Romeros have never raised a man who runs away from the altar.”

Simon gave a faint smile. “This is on me.”

He turned to Tammy, already prepared with his excuse. “Tammy … I have clinical depression. I thought I could manage it, that being with you and getting married might help me get through it. But I was wrong. It’s still there, stronger than ever. Living feels exhausting. It might be today, maybe tomorrow, but I know I’ll end up leaving this world. You deserve someone better. Someone stable. Someone who can stay.”

Tammy stared at him, her eyes locked on his face, full of disbelief. Not a single word rang true.

They had been so close, how could she not have known if he were sick?
