Quinton knew his son hated it, so he didn’t force Sterling to call Winnie his mom. But at the very least, Sterling should’ve used a respectful title for an elder.

Sterling smirked. “She deserves that?”

“You-”

Just as another argument was about to start, Donovan slammed his cane against the floor. “Enough! Stop making a scene in front of everyone!”

Quinton and Winnie bit back their words, sulking in silence.

After making a round of introductions, Claudia realized she barely remembered anyone besides Sterling’s father and stepmother.

Too many people. Too confusing.

But Kenneth’s daughter, Khloe Romero, kept staring at her. Finally, she asked, “Your last name is Lancaster? From the Lancaster Group? What’s your connection to Lydia?”

Claudia raised a brow. “You’ve got the right person.”

Khloe’s face shifted instantly.

She’d heard Lydia talk about her foster sister—said she wasn’t simple. She never expected this girl to show up at her family gathering.

That arrogant confidence really did match the rumors.

The Lancasters weren’t a big deal–definitely not in the same league as the Romeros.

Still, some people in the room had heard whispers about their family drama.

Wasn’t this the youngest Lancaster daughter? The one who rarely appeared in public, with a terrible reputation? Rumor had it she even sent her sister to the ER not long ago.

Those who knew the story quickly filled in the others. Soon, the room was full of scornful looks aimed at Claudia.

Quinton let out a cold laugh. “Not every woman with no standing can dream of becoming the lady of this household.”

He was a father with no real authority. Now, he had latched onto Sterling’s weak spot, desperate to crush his choices.

Instead of being embarrassed that her background was known to everyone, Claudia blinked innocently and said something shocking: “That’s okay. I don’t mind if Sterling marries into my family.”

The entire room froze.

Goodness! Did she actually say that?

What was even more shocking–Sterling didn’t deny it. He only looked at her fondly, like he couldn’t care less.

“This is getting more and more ridiculous!” Donovan barked, slamming his cane again.

At this rate, the poor floor might catch fire from all the slamming before the gathering was

over.

Hailey, who had brought her niece along, finally snapped. “This is our family gathering. How dare an outsider sit here and speak so boldly?”

Though she was an illegitimate child, she was Donovan’s youngest and most spoiled, so she spoke with arrogance.

Others might hold their tongue around Sterling, but she dared to speak up.

The Lancasters were a small family. There was no way someone as cold as Sterling would actually care for Claudia.

He was probably just playing around to annoy them.

Hailey wasn’t about to let Claudia step all over them. If Claudia had any sense, she’d leave quietly.

“Huh? Me?” Claudia looked surprised, pointing at herself.

Then she shook her head. “It’s fine. We’ll be family soon. I’ll do my best. But the lady next to you–sorry, I can’t remember. Is she one of Sterling’s sisters?”

They mocked her background, so she pulled away their cover.

Sterling had been like a wolf since he was young. The elders tried to suppress him, to hold back his growth, but every attempt ended with him biting back and leaving them powerless.
