Sabrina said quietly, “You like Marshall.”
Uliana stopped dead in her tracks.
She turned around, her cheeks puffed up in indignation as she glared at Sabrina. “You… don’t say nonsense.”
“You know better than anyone if I’m speaking nonsense. There’s nothing wrong with liking someone. Why hide it?” Sabrina’s tone was calm, almost gentle.
“Don’t act like you’re so clever,” Uliana shot back, “I never said I liked him.”
“It’s because he has feelings for Celine, isn’t it? That’s why you keep your feelings bottled up.”
Sabrina’s words hit a nerve. The calm Uliana had tried so hard to maintain began to crack, her composure slipping away.
“What are you getting at?” Uliana asked warily.
“There’s no bad blood between us,” Sabrina replied. “Instead of being rivals, why don’t we work together?”
“Work together?” Uliana stared at her, certain she’d misheard. Sabrina—of all people—was proposing an alliance?
So, she’d found out Uliana’s secret and was here to use it as leverage?
“You think you’ve got something on me, so I’ll just do whatever you want? I’ve never admitted to liking anyone, so you can’t threaten me.”
Sabrina shook her head. “No, you’re misunderstanding me. If I wanted to take someone down, I’d never let her see it coming.”
She stepped down from the piano and walked slowly, deliberately, until she was standing right in front of Uliana.
“To everyone else, Celine is the picture of kindness and grace—the perfect girl. She ticks every box on Marshall’s list… except for her background. But if you want to change Marshall’s mind, the best way is to show him who she really is behind the mask.”
“She’s not perfect—not really. All that perfection is just a facade. You’ve seen through it, haven’t you?”
“Someone like her has been using you all along. Do you really still think of her as a friend?”
Uliana tried to look unimpressed, her guard up, but inside, her resolution was wavering.
