Sabrina withdrew her gaze and walked forward, her heels clicking quietly on the polished floor.

Desmond stood rooted to the spot, looking utterly lost. He’d wanted to follow them to the hospital, but he was needed here. Someone had to wait for the police, and the guests hadn’t dispersed yet.

He felt utterly spent.

Sabrina watched it all unfold with cool detachment.

Tonight had been a chess match—three players, each trying to outmaneuver the others. In the end, it was just a question of who played their hand best.

She’d missed quite the show.

Crossing the room, she gently took her grandmother’s cold hand.

“Come on, Grandma. Let me help you back to your room.”

What was done was done. Desmond was still here; there was no reason for Octavia to stay and risk her health.

Octavia looked at Sabrina, safe and unharmed, and patted her hand in relief. She nodded but said nothing. She was already running on empty, too exhausted to speak.

After a night like this, there was no reason for an old woman like her to linger. She wanted nothing more than to go to the hospital and check on Sommer and Hester, but thinking of her own frail health, she knew she’d only be a burden, needing care herself.

Better to let the doctors do their work. She’d wait in her room for news.

In her heart, Octavia prayed that both her daughter-in-law and granddaughter would pull through.

Once Sabrina had helped Octavia back to her room, Stella gave her a quick checkup, making sure she was truly all right before leaving.

Sabrina returned to the front hall.

By then, the police had arrived. The remaining guests were cooperating with the investigation, and the festive atmosphere had evaporated. One by one, people stepped forward to say their goodbyes to Desmond and Sabrina.

The attacker was led away in handcuffs.

Desmond left for the hospital as soon as the police were finished with him.
