Sunny had barely stepped out of the bathroom when she saw a string of missed calls from her best friend.
"Sunny, do you know my Uncle Stellan just got married?!"
Sunny froze, blurting out, "Zara, how did you find out?"
With a flutter of nerves, she opened Stellan's social media page. Sure enough, there it was—a photo, unmistakably him, holding up a marriage certificate.
"He posted it himself!" Zara's voice was breathless with disbelief. "He didn't just post the certificate, he even captioned it, ‘Anyone else still single out there?' Can you believe that?"
Even as Zara spoke, Sunny's phone buzzed with a notification—Stellan's post, plain as day.
"Sunny, are you listening? This is insane! Has my uncle been possessed or something?"
"And think about it—he only introduced his girlfriend less than a month ago. That's got to be a whirlwind wedding, right?!"
Sunny stayed silent so long that Zara finally noticed. "Sunny? Why aren't you saying anything?"
Sunny swallowed hard, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Zara, there's something I have to tell you. The person who went to the courthouse with your Uncle Stellan… was me."
There was a thud as Zara's phone hit the floor, followed by a distant, muffled shriek.
It sounded like Zara was underwater, her voice bubbling and distorted through the phone's speaker.
Sunny, nerves fraying, quickly ended the call. She didn't have time to explain—not with Stellan likely looking for her. And sure enough, as she stepped out, she found him waiting by the bathroom door.
"Everything okay?" he asked gently.
Sunny shook her head, then corrected herself, "I'm fine. Let's go."
She climbed shakily into the passenger seat, fumbling with her seatbelt.
"Stellan, about that post you just made…" Her words tangled together, her expression conflicted. "Why did you share it with everyone?"
"And he only just mentioned having a girlfriend—now he's married?" Annabelle wrung her hands, worry in her voice. "Dad, you don't think Stellan's been tricked into this, do you?"
Abbot felt a strange mix of irritation and joy.
He was annoyed that something as monumental as a marriage license had been kept from the family—finding out at the same time as everyone else, through social media, no less.
But his eldest, the family's perpetual bachelor, was finally married! Abbot was so overwhelmed he almost wanted to cry.
"Zara, why are you just standing there? Stellan dotes on you the most. Did you know about this? Have you ever met his bride?" Annabelle asked, turning to her niece.
Zara shook her head furiously, like a maraca. "…I had no idea."
Annabelle eyed her suspiciously. "You really didn't know?"
"Aunt Annabelle, I swear I didn't!" Zara practically shouted, her voice rising with her guilt.
What else could she possibly say? That her best friend just went from being her future sister-in-law to her new aunt overnight?
