Wyatt sat in the boardroom, an inexplicable chill creeping along his spine.
"Everything alright, Mr. Glenn? Maybe the AC's turned up too high," asked one of the Lawson Corporation employees.
Wyatt shook his head, forcing a laugh. "No, no, I'm fine. I'm not that delicate."
He had no idea that, at that very moment, his name had just been added to someone's hit list.
Sunny had just ducked out to use the restroom, not expecting to run into the last person she wanted to see.
Magnus Lawson stood in the corridor, his brow furrowed in that unmistakable way, voice low and steady. "Sunny. Back again, are you?"
Back again? What was that supposed to mean?
Sunny greeted him with a polite but distant smile. "Uncle Lawson."
To be honest, calling him "Uncle Lawson" wasn't strictly accurate anymore. Given their current family ties, she could technically call him "brother" now.
It felt a little absurd, sure, but since marrying Stellan, her status had risen accordingly.
A flicker of disdain passed through Magnus's eyes. "Here to see Stellan?"
Sunny's smile never wavered. "I'm here on business with the law firm."
"Mm." Magnus's expression didn't soften. He gave her a long, meaningful look. "Sunny, I never realized you were quite this ambitious."
The implication was clear. Sunny dropped the act, her gaze turning icy. "If you have something to say, maybe you should take it up with Stellan?"
Magnus gave a humorless chuckle. "He just married you—of course he's protective. But let's be honest, Sunny, the difference between you two is pretty stark. How long do you think a man's infatuation will really last?"
Sunny stood her ground, calm and cool. "Uncle Lawson, Stellan's your brother. Isn't it a bit inappropriate to insult your own family?"
She smiled, sharp as a knife. "No matter how short-lived, at least his interest has lasted longer than your son's ever did."
Jude had assumed the boss would be eager to see his new wife, but it seemed he'd changed his mind in the span of a single phone call.
He couldn't help but chuckle to himself—no one ever really knew what their CEO was thinking.
Jude returned to the boardroom, putting on a professional smile. "Sorry, everyone. Our CEO is tied up at the moment. Once he's reviewed the contract, I'll let you know about next steps. Thank you all for your hard work today."
Sunny packed up her laptop, ready to head back to the firm.
They all headed for the elevator together, but Wyatt realized he'd forgotten something and asked Sunny to wait for him in the parking garage.
Sunny watched the elevator doors slide open to reveal an empty car. She hesitated, thinking she might wait for her boss, but before she could decide, a pair of polished black dress shoes stepped inside.
She looked up, her gaze locking with Stellan's—his handsome, cold features composed as ever.
Jude Pierce stepped in with him, pressing the button for the fifth floor. Stellan didn't move.
