Sunny had just paid off the last of the bills yesterday. Now, she had only eighteen thousand left in all her accounts—barely enough to cover her grandmother's care for another three and a half months.
Her grandmother used to live with them in the family's old manor.
But Wendy's health had always been fragile, and she preferred peace and quiet. Meanwhile, Grace Quinn insisted on practicing her operatic scales every single morning at the top of her lungs.
Then there was the time one of the housemaids mixed up her medication. After that, Wendy herself requested to move into a care facility.
At first, Sunny resisted the idea. But after seeing how professional and attentive the staff were, she let go. This was a high-end nursing home, with one-on-one care, an outstanding medical team, and renowned doctors on call. It was actually more comfortable than living at home.
Sunny made time every week to visit her grandmother. In the entire Carrington family, Wendy was the only one who truly cared for her.
Sunny never imagined her grandmother would become a bargaining chip for Sean to threaten her. He really had no conscience at all.
"Grandma, it's me—Sunny! I came to see you!"
Wendy's face lit up when she saw her favorite granddaughter. "Sunny, you're here!"
She looked her up and down, her gaze sharp but full of love. "You've lost weight again! Sunny, I told you—no more dieting. Any thinner and you'll disappear!"
Sunny smiled softly. "No more dieting, Grandma. I'll listen to you, I promise."
Wendy shook her head with a fond sigh at her granddaughter's hug. "It's only been a few days and you're already back to being my little girl, huh?"
"Is work too much lately? Are they giving you a hard time out there?"
Sunny shook her head, letting down her guard only in front of the one person who doted on her.
"No, Grandma. I just missed you."
Wendy chuckled. "I missed you too. How's your father? And is your sister behaving herself these days?"
"Mmm. I'm done with him, Grandma. I don't want to get married at all. Please, can you grant me this one wish?"
Wendy fell silent, thinking for a long moment before finally letting out a weary sigh.
"If you don't want to marry, then don't. Our Sunny deserves better."
Sunny buried her face in Wendy's shoulder. "You're the best, Grandma. I love you more than anyone."
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
"Mrs. Carrington, you have a visitor. He says his name is Lawson."
Sunny's smile vanished instantly. She thought it must be Tristan and said coldly, "I don't want to see him."
But a tall figure stepped quietly into the room. "Sunny, you're not even going to see me?"
