The doctor had told her: the burn needed to breathe, not be covered. If she kept it hidden under her scarf, it would only heal more slowly.
As soon as Sunny walked into the law firm, Lily Williams spotted it.
"Oh no, Sunny, is that a burn on your neck?"
Sunny gave a small, easy smile. "Yeah, I accidentally scalded myself yesterday. It looks worse than it is—just needs a couple days of ointment."
Lily fussed over her, insisting she should've taken a few days off to recover, but before Sunny could answer, the boss called her into his office.
She walked in and sat down. "You wanted to see me, Wyatt?"
Wyatt's eyes landed on the faint red burn along her neck, and he frowned. "How on earth did you manage to burn your neck?"
Sunny just shrugged, her smile calm and unbothered. "My dog knocked over my mug. Next thing I knew—burned myself."
Wyatt shook his head in exasperation. "You know, you're sharp as a tack at work, but in your own life, you're all over the place."
She grinned. "Guess I can't be perfect everywhere."
He gave her a pointed look. "And I'm not rushing you, but the breakup with your ex is old news. Look, I've even got a wedding envelope ready for you—will I finally get to use it next year?"
Sunny laughed silently. "Boss, that's not really something I can force. But I'll do my best."
Wyatt handed her a thick stack of documents. "Have you heard of Mr. Stellan Lawson from the Lawson family?"
Sunny's heart skipped a beat.
Keeping her composure, she took the file and flipped to the first page. A photo stared back at her: a man's face, striking and coldly handsome.
"Stellan Lawson, thirty-three. Still pretty young, but he's actually the one running Lawson Corporation. He spent the last few years expanding their overseas business, just got back to the country a few days ago. Word is, he's planning to double down on domestic markets."
"What are you thinking?" Sunny asked.
Wyatt tapped his fingers on the desk, eyes gleaming. "He's only been back a few days, but I already heard some inside news: Lawson Corporation is looking to acquire VeriTrust Electronics. If we can land the legal contract for this merger, we'll finally get our foot in the door with Lawson Corporation."
She let it go to voicemail.
The second time, he called the front desk directly.
With a sigh, Sunny swallowed her irritation and picked up.
"Hello, Mr. Lawson, how can I help you?"
The way she said "Mr. Lawson" made Tristan's temple throb.
"Sunny, I'm ordering you to come to my office. Now."
Sunny turned her back to the front desk, rolling her eyes. "Mr. Lawson, I really can't get away today. Can I send Lawyer Fletcher instead? He's a senior associate with five years' experience. I promise he'll handle everything for you."
"No. It has to be you. Sunny, I'm giving you one chance. If you keep stalling, I'll call Mr. Harrison myself."
Sunny exhaled, defeated. "…Fine. I'll be at SkyVault in thirty minutes."
