Stand Me Up? I'll Marry His Billionaire Uncle novel Chapter 51

Sunny's phone slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor.

Xander looked over, puzzled. "Sunny? Are you okay? Still stressing about the boss and Attorney Lewis going head to head?"

"Don't worry. Director Harrison usually sides with our boss anyway. This time, Lewis is lowballing the offer just to snatch the Lawson Corporation contract from us. Once Director Harrison knows the backstory, I doubt he'd take Lewis's side."

Lily Williams leaned in, her voice conspiratorial. "Don't be so sure. I heard someone on the inside has a connection with Lawson Corporation."

"Who?" Sunny and Xander both asked at once.

"You know who I mean," Lily whispered, glancing around. "Our former boss's wife."

It clicked for Sunny—Lily was talking about Attorney Glenn's ex-wife.

Only after she finished talking did Sunny remember her phone was still on the floor. She bent to pick it up, flipping it over, but froze when she saw the screen.

Her fingers trembled slightly around the phone.

Someone please tell her—how had she just spent ten minutes on a WhatsApp call with Stellan?

She panicked, mashing the red button to end the call.

But the more she thought about it, the worse it seemed. Now it looked like she'd deliberately called Stellan, let him overhear her venting, and then hung up on purpose.

Sunny groaned inwardly.

She felt like one of those scheming, melodramatic villains from a cheap romance novel.

With shaky hands, she navigated back to her chat with Stellan.

Uncle Stellan, I'm sorry—if I said the whole thing was just a coincidence, would you believe me?

Coincidence? Oh, you mean you just happened to open my chat and stare at it for half an hour, then by chance hit the call button, and then I coincidentally overheard your office gossip?

Sunny wanted to cry. She typed one word: Yes!

That's quite a string of coincidences. As it happens, I'll be passing your building later. Want to grab dinner and talk it over tonight?

What could she say? Could she refuse?

No. No, she couldn't.

With the boss saying nothing, Sunny and the others just returned to their computers and busied themselves with work.

Vanessa, seeing her jab had failed to provoke a reaction, lost interest and drifted away.

Sunny felt sick to her stomach. This was how it always was in their world—the better your connections, the more resources you had.

You needed first-class skills, but without powerful backing, you were always at a disadvantage.

Unfortunately, Attorney Glenn was just like her—neither of them had any of that.

When Sunny saw the time, she packed up ten minutes early.

Mostly, she just didn't want her coworkers to catch her leaving with Stellan—there'd be too much to explain.

Stellan watched as she slipped into his car, glancing around like a burglar before shutting the door.

He quirked an eyebrow. "What's the matter? Got the cops on your tail?"
