Stand Me Up? I'll Marry His Billionaire Uncle novel Chapter 84

She placed the paperwork on the desk in the office, then hurried back to the operating room.

From three in the morning until nine o'clock, Sunny sat in silence, tears streaming down her face. At 9:07, the doors to the operating room finally opened.

A doctor stepped out, his expression solemn. "I'm sorry, Miss Carrington. We did everything we could."

He glanced at the family gathered in the hallway and calmly announced, "The patient, Wendy Carrington, time of death: 9:07 a.m. Cause of death: cardiac failure."

Sunny's knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed, but a quick-thinking nurse caught her just in time.

"My condolences, Miss Carrington. There's still a lot of paperwork to handle—please, call your family."

Clutching the nurse's hand, Sunny managed to choke out, "Doctor, nurse, please… I need to see my grandmother."

"She'll be brought back to her room right away," the nurse assured her gently.

When Sunny saw two nurses quietly wheel her grandmother back, the old woman's face hidden beneath a white sheet, she sank to her knees at the bedside.

She couldn't bring herself to lift the sheet. She couldn't accept that the gentle, loving woman she'd seen just days before was suddenly gone.

It felt as if an invisible hand was squeezing her heart, threatening to tear it from her chest. The pain was so intense, she could barely breathe.

"Grandma—" Sunny sobbed, collapsed against the bed.

Memories crashed through her mind in waves.

"Sunny, come here. Grandma will tell you a story, all right?"

"Don't cry, Sunny. If your father won't love you, then I'll be your rock. You'll always have me, and that's enough!"

"Sunny, this is the five percent share of the company I'm leaving you. I don't know what it'll be worth, but whatever it is, it's yours. Remember, darling: a woman with money has confidence."

Sunny pulled out her phone and dialed Sean.

He answered with a cold scoff. "What, finally decided to call and beg for forgiveness?"

Her voice was icy. "Grandma's gone."

The shock knocked the wind out of Sean. He sat bolt upright. "Mom's gone? When? Right now?"

"Yes. Come to the hospital. Alone. I don't want anyone else there."

Sean's brow furrowed, grief flickering across his features. Whatever else had happened, she was still his mother.

Grace Quinn, hearing him on the phone, came over, concern etched on her face. "What's wrong, Sean? Who passed away?"

His voice dropped. "My mother. She's gone. You and Chloe stay home. I need to go to the hospital to take care of the arrangements."
