“Is that Mr. Smith’s daughter over there? Didn’t I hear she’s on the spectrum? She looks pretty normal to me!”
“She’s adorable! Look at those bright, curious eyes—doesn’t seem shy at all. Like little sapphires!”
“That mother-daughter duo is just gorgeous, aren’t they?”
“….”
As the whispers circled, all eyes drifted toward the pair standing by the refreshment table.
Camila Davis kept her expression cool, barely acknowledging the attention. She was focused on Jordan Smith across the room.
Tonight, Jordan was resplendent in an expensive tux, radiating that unmistakable air of someone who always stands out in a crowd.
His parents and younger brother flanked him, each of them dressed to impress. Clearly, they’d caught wind of the gossip too, because now the whole Smith family was making their way over.
Camila didn’t even bother to greet them.
Sarah Brown had to fight the urge to roll her eyes. In her opinion, the entire Smith clan was just too much—playing it up for the crowd.
Only little Lillian, as soon as Jordan stopped in front of them, piped up in her sweet, soft voice, “Daddy.”
Jordan gave her a small nod and crouched down to hug her. “It’s your birthday today, kiddo. Let’s make sure you have the best party ever!”
Lillian beamed, clutching the skirt of the new dress Sarah had given her, obviously hoping for a compliment from her dad.
But Jordan didn’t catch on. He was on his feet again in a heartbeat.
Camila’s brow furrowed, her mood darkening.
Sarah was practically vibrating with annoyance. Seriously? That’s it? Could he be any more dismissive?
And as for Mr. and Mrs. Smith—and Lucas, the younger brother—they didn’t even bother to fake a smile, let alone wish Lillian a happy birthday.
Sarah was fuming. What a bunch of charmers!
Right then, gentle piano music floated through the ballroom. The MC strode onstage and welcomed everyone, signaling the start of the evening.
As the banquet began, Jordan completely ignored Lillian and started making the rounds, schmoozing with the guests.
“Mr. Smith, you’re so fortunate—such a lovely daughter, and this grand party for her birthday! Shows how much you care.”
“Busy as you are, to still put this together? You’re a real family man, Mr. Smith…”
