Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 129

Camila Davis just wasn’t in the mood to stick around any longer. She turned to her friends and said, “Let’s get out of here.”

Walter Wilson and the others were more than happy to agree.

Once they stepped out of the hotel, Larry Adams was the first to say his goodbyes. “Well, I’ve delivered the gift. Time for me to head back and report in.”

Camila smiled. “Thanks for coming all the way out here, Mr. Adams. Really appreciate it.”

Larry waved her off. Honestly, when the boss gives you an order in person, you don’t really have a choice, do you? Especially after working so hard to get off the blacklist. Not that he’d say any of that out loud—he just left quickly.

Walter offered to drive the rest of them home.

Camila, her best friend, and little Lillian piled into the back seat. Lightning, the new puppy, curled up contentedly in Lillian’s arms.

Sarah Brown was completely enchanted by the puppy and kept sneaking glances, obviously dying to pet it but a little too shy to ask.

Lillian noticed, grabbed Sarah’s hand, and said, “Lightning’s super friendly! I’ll show you how to pet him. He won’t mind—just let him get used to you first.”

Sarah didn’t hesitate. With Lillian’s encouragement, she got to pet Lightning—and the fluffball was so soft, she was instantly smitten.

Once the ice was broken and everyone was more relaxed, Sarah brought up the evening. “Mr. Wilson, then Mr. and Mrs. Harris, and even this little K9 hero of ours all showing up together… I have to say, Lillian, you finally got some justice tonight. Did you see The Smiths’ faces when we left? Priceless! Looked like a box of crayons spilled all over them.”

Camila was busy texting her detective, asking them to keep an eye on Jordan Smith’s next moves. There were still guests back in the banquet hall, but he hadn’t gone with Sandra Taylor to the hospital. She figured he’d probably head over once things wrapped up.

When she finished giving instructions, she put her phone away and replied, “Yeah, it was pretty satisfying.”

Later that night, the three friends took Lillian out for dessert, found a cozy café, and split a slice of cake—making up for the one they missed at the party.

Afterwards, they finally brought Lillian home. It was late, but with Lightning around, Lillian was too excited for sleep.

So Camila helped her set up a comfy little bed for the puppy, right next to Lillian’s. That way, Lightning would feel safe and Lillian would be thrilled. Honestly, Camila worried about leaving him out in the living room—after how wild things got at the party, who knew if someone might come looking for trouble tonight?

But to her surprise, Jordan Smith didn’t come back that night. Then again, it made sense: his “first love’s” son got hurt, and with Sandra Taylor sobbing her eyes out, of course he’d be there for her.

Camila had no idea that after she’d left, the party had basically fizzled out, too. The birthday girl was gone, Walter Wilson and the Harris family had made a big scene supporting Camila, and all the Smiths’ carefully planned dinner felt like a total flop.

People were definitely judging The Smith Family that night.

After the unhappy ending, Barbara Jones called Sandra Taylor right away to ask about Daniel.
