Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 134

Jordan Smith never expected that Camila Davis would show up this late at night just to talk about this.

Usually, when he was working in his study, she’d come in with some healthy chicken noodle soup or a fruit plate—always the caring wife, making sure he ate right.

But tonight? She looked ready for a showdown.

His handsome features tightened, blue eyes flashing with cold anger. A slow-burning frustration bubbled up in his chest.

Camila’s face was unreadable, her gaze sharp as ice.

She met his eyes, and there was no warmth there—no affection, no love. Just cool indifference.

And somehow, that made Jordan even more unsettled. It hit him then: Camila had changed—a lot.

She wore clothes she never would have picked before, hung out with people she once completely ignored, and her career? She was suddenly making waves he hadn’t seen coming.

He used to think she was dull, boring—a glass of lukewarm tap water, nothing more.

But now, she was like a polished gem that had just been dusted off, or a blade pulled from its sheath—shining, sharp, impossible to ignore.

Jordan’s eyes darkened; he barely kept his anger in check as he picked up the divorce papers.

They were exactly the same as the ones she’d sent to Smith Enterprises before.

She was really walking away from everything—no claims on the house, the cars, the money. All she wanted was custody of Lillian.

Ha! Walking out with nothing… so clean, so bold.

Jordan let out a cold laugh, closed the folder, and said flatly, “Alright then. Let’s talk.”

Camila thought he’d finally come around. She said, “Great. Just sign at the bottom, would you? I doubt you have the patience to drag this through court. Let’s just get it over with and save us both the trouble.”

Jordan leaned back in his chair, cool as ever. “Who said I was signing? Divorce, custody—like it’s that simple? Lillian’s my daughter too. I’m not giving up custody.”

He paused, letting that sink in. “Frankly, I don’t think you could handle her on your own.”

Camila’s eyes flashed with anger. She’d underestimated just how shameless he could be.

Her voice was icy. “Oh, so you think you could handle her? You want custody? Since when have you even looked at Lillian like a real father? She’s on the spectrum, and you can’t even bother to talk to her. When you remember she exists, you throw her a few fake smiles, that’s it. What have you ever done for her as her dad?”

She bit out the words, her tone scathing. “You’ve spent more time worrying about Sandra Taylor’s kid than your own daughter! On her birthday, you even made a big show of welcoming your godson—right in front of her. Did you ever think she wouldn’t notice? That she couldn’t feel anything?”

Her final words were like a blade: “Jordan Smith, what makes you think you deserve custody?”

The question hit him like a punch to the chest.
