Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 139

But this time, it was Lillian’s very first performance since starting school, and she really seemed to hope he would come.

Camila Davis just couldn’t bring herself to crush that hope. So she sighed and said, “Alright, honey, I’ll ask him for you.”

Lillian nodded, her little face lighting up, eyes shining with anticipation.

Camila stepped out onto the balcony, took a deep breath, and—just for a moment—unblocked Jordan Smith’s number.

She called. To her surprise, he actually picked up.

His tone, though, was ice-cold. “What do you want?”

Clearly, he was still upset about what had happened before.

Camila ignored the attitude and went straight to the point. “Lillian’s school is having a performance this Friday. It’s a ‘bring your dad’ kind of thing. She’d really like you to come. Are you free?”

Jordan didn’t answer right away. He sounded distracted, almost like he was looking for an excuse. “I’ll have to check my schedule.”

Camila’s eyes darkened, but she didn’t push it. “Fine. Let me know by eight tonight.”

And with that, she hung up.

At that moment, Jordan was over at the Smith family’s place.

Tonight, Sandra Taylor had brought her son Daniel to have dinner with Jordan’s parents, Barbara and Mason Smith.

Wanting to show she was just as comfortable in the kitchen as she was at work, Sandra had cooked up a spread—classic roast beef, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and her famous apple pie.

As Sandra was calling everyone to the table, Barbara beamed. “Sandra, you really are a treasure. You handle your job like a pro and still have time to put together a meal like this. Whoever marries you is one lucky guy.”

Sandra smiled sweetly. “Camila, you’re too kind! I’m just glad you and Mr. Smith like it.”

Mason nodded his approval, then looked at Daniel with a grin. “And you’ve done a great job with this little guy. Raising a kid while working—impressive!”

Daniel perked up, eager to share. “Grandpa Smith, guess what? I wrote a journal at school today, and my teacher said I won first prize! She’s giving me a certificate on Friday.”

Barbara’s eyes widened. “You’re writing journals already? That’s amazing, Daniel!”

Daniel nodded proudly. “Mom taught me! This is my first award since we moved back. Can I invite Dad Jordan to come with me to the ceremony?”

Jordan looked a little surprised. “Me?”

“Yeah! All the other kids have their parents there,” Daniel pleaded, tugging Jordan’s sleeve. “Please, Dad Jordan? Will you come with me?”

Sandra glanced over hopefully. “Jordan, last time you went to sign Daniel up for school, the kids wouldn’t stop talking about how cool his dad was. They’ve been wanting to meet you again. Come on, say yes?”

Jordan hesitated, but before he could answer, Barbara chimed in, “Of course you should go! Daniel’s done so well—you should be there to support him.”
