Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 141

A little while later, Lillian walked over and knocked on the door, ready for her big scene with her scene partner. That strange, uneasy feeling crept up again.

During rehearsals, Larry Adams had always read his lines with a deliberately sharp, goofy voice, making everyone laugh.

But now, maybe because the wolf mask was stuffy, or maybe for some other reason, his voice sounded way calmer—almost normal.

And the scene didn’t quite go as rehearsed, either.

Some of the more detailed bits they’d practiced were skipped over, but somehow, it all flowed so smoothly that Lillian was able to keep up without missing a beat.

The parents in the audience didn’t notice anything was off.

When the “Big Bad Wolf” finally got his comeuppance, the applause was thunderous.

Everyone was raving. “That was amazing!” “Best school play I’ve seen in years!”

Even the other kids were excited. “I wanna wear the Little Red Riding Hood costume next time!”

Camila Davis, who had been anxiously watching from the side, glanced over at Lillian.

It was the first time her little girl had ever gotten so much praise and encouragement. Lillian’s cheeks were glowing pink with happiness, and she looked absolutely adorable in her bright red cape and dress—so sweet that Camila felt her heart melt.

Camila couldn’t help grinning too.

After taking a bow together with “Larry Adams” and Lillian, Camila headed back to the staff lounge behind the stage to finally take a breather.

As soon as she got inside, she pulled off her gray granny’s shawl, which had been wrapped so tightly around her head during her turn as Grandma that only half her face had been showing. After all, she couldn’t exactly play a senior citizen looking like her usual self!

At last, she could breathe again. Pulling off the shawl, she shook out her long hair, which tumbled down around her shoulders, and turned to the man in the wolf costume, laughing as she spoke.

“Mr. Adams, thank you so much for tonight. You rehearsed with us for days and pulled off a fantastic show. Lillian was thrilled. I honestly don’t know what we’d have done without you! But, um, did you change the ending a bit? It seemed—simpler?”

The man paused for a moment, then tugged off the wolf head.

“Yeah, I did,” he admitted. “I only had a couple minutes to memorize the lines, so I just kept it simple. Hope it didn’t throw you off?”

As he spoke, Camila suddenly got a good look at his face for the first time—and froze.

This wasn’t Larry Adams.

But whoever he was, he was… well, almost shockingly handsome. Movie star handsome. His features were striking—sharp cheekbones, deep-set eyes, a kind of cool, distant aura. Even in the silly wolf costume, you could tell he was tall, with a certain effortless grace.

He stood there, lips quirking up in a wry smile, looking like he’d just stepped off a Greek myth.
