Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 151

Camila Davis thanked them over and over.

After they left the military district, Lillian snuggled Lightning in her arms and pouted, “Mommy, Lightning’s hungry. And so is Lillian...”

Right on cue, both their tummies let out a loud growl.

Grrrrrr—

Camila couldn’t help but laugh and ruffled Lillian’s hair. “Alright, you two. Let’s go get something delicious. You both were absolute stars today.”

Lillian beamed and nodded eagerly.

Camila quickly pulled out her phone and searched for a good buffet restaurant.

Turns out, the place she found was celebrating its anniversary—buy two, get one free. Perfect.

She thought for a moment and dialed Sarah Brown. “Come eat with us.”

Sarah groaned, “I’m on a diet! No way.”

Camila grinned, “Yeah, I know. But I need you for something. Just get over here.”

Sarah sounded suspicious, but curiosity got the better of her and she showed up anyway.

An hour later, inside the restaurant—

Sarah watched as Camila and the two little ones—well, one actual kid and one happy dog—dug into their food with gusto. She raised an eyebrow. “Wait. Don’t tell me you called me here just so Lightning could eat for free?”

Camila gave her a sly smile. “Bingo! With your help, Lightning gets to eat on the house.”

Lightning, as if understanding every word, lifted his head from his bowl of beef stew and let out a soft “woof” in Sarah’s direction.

Sarah burst out laughing. “Unbelievable! So what, you’re counting me as the ‘dog’ in this deal? And here I am, not even getting a bite while the dog’s living it up. I swear, I’m lower than the family pet!”

Camila tried to soothe her, “Come on, if you really want some, I’m sure Lightning will share a little beef with you.”

“Oh, so now I’m supposed to thank the dog?” Sarah laughed, shaking her head. “Honestly, how did I end up with you as a friend?”

Is it too late to end this friendship now?

The next few days, Harrisburg was shrouded in cold, rainy weather.

But Camila’s days were still jam-packed and fulfilling.

The research at the lab was going well, and the new recruits she’d screened were efficient and diligent.

One morning, Barbara Jones called out of the blue.

“Today’s the forty-ninth day memorial for Grandma Smith,” she said. “There’s a part of the ceremony where Lillian, as the eldest great-granddaughter, needs to kneel and pay her respects. Bring her over.”

It wasn’t really a request. More like an order.

Camila had no intention of getting tangled up with the Smiths again. She’d already said farewell to Grandma Smith during the last memorial.

But Barbara seemed to know exactly what she was thinking. “If you don’t want to bring her, that’s fine. I’ll send someone to fetch her. But Camila, Grandma Smith loved you like her own. If you can’t even bring her precious great-granddaughter to say goodbye, how do you expect to live with yourself?”

Camila frowned, but in the end, she couldn’t refuse.
