Because every word she said was the truth.
But she just couldn’t stand to see Camila Davis looking so smug, so she sneered again. “Say whatever you want, but Lillian’s still got Smith blood in her veins. That’s a fact. And if you think you’re getting custody, dream on—unless you agree to my terms.”
“Fifty million dollars. You walk away from Wilson Enterprises. From here on out, you’re banned from the pharmaceutical industry, and you’re never allowed to compete with the Smith family again.”
Camila’s eyes went wide. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
So the money wasn’t even the worst of it. They wanted her out of the entire industry—for good.
She was trembling with rage, glaring at the mother and son standing in front of her. “Jordan, was this your idea? Kicking me out of Smith Pharmaceuticals wasn’t enough, now you’re blacklisting me from the whole industry? Using Lillian as leverage?”
Jordan looked genuinely shaken under her gaze. He frowned and snapped, “This wasn’t my idea.”
Then he turned to Barbara. “Mom, this is too much. There’s no need to go that far.”
Barbara Jones was having none of it. “What do you mean, no need? Jordan, don’t be so soft on her! She schemed her way into marrying you, leeching off the Smiths, and when things didn’t go her way, she went on the warpath. Women like her—you have to be ruthless!”
Camila’s patience snapped. Disgusted, she grabbed a fistful of Barbara’s cashmere sweater.
“Hand Lillian over. Right now. Or I’m calling the police!”
“Camila Davis! Let go of me! You have no right!” Barbara shrieked, struggling to break free. “I’m her grandmother! I have every right to take my granddaughter out for a little while. Go on, call the cops—see if they care!”
She finished with a smug, icy grin.
Camila’s fingers tightened. This woman was despicable.
And yet… she was right. If the police showed up, they’d just call it a family squabble and tell them to sort it out themselves.
So if the law wouldn’t help, she’d have to handle it her own way.
With a sharp exhale, Camila released Barbara, who stumbled backwards and landed hard on the polished wood floor, looking utterly ridiculous.
Camila’s eyes burned with fury. “Barbara, if you so much as lay a finger on Lillian, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”
With that, she whipped out her phone and called her friend, Sarah Brown, giving her quick instructions.
Sarah arrived within minutes, bringing Lightning—the family’s loyal beagle.
