Helen Adams’s eyes lit up, and she couldn’t help blurting out, “So, Camila, does this mean I can hang out with whoever I want now? Like, actually be close to someone I like?”
Camila Davis chuckled and ruffled Helen’s hair. “That’s right, but you’re still young. Don’t spend all your time thinking about, well, you know, that kind of stuff.”
Helen grinned, looping her arm through Camila’s and leaning in playfully. “Don’t worry, I just meant holding hands and stuff like that. I’m not thinking about anything else, promise…”
Then, she showered Camila with praise, “Camila, you are amazing! No wonder Dennis called you the miracle doctor—your skills are incredible. To thank you, you have to stay for dinner tonight, okay? Let’s have a good old-fashioned American barbecue together!”
Camila was about to decline.
But Sophia Miller chimed in, echoing Helen’s warm invite, and Helen started tugging at her arm, pleading, “Oh, please, Camila! I’ve been stuck at home for ages, I’m going stir-crazy. Now that I’m finally getting better, let’s celebrate! You’re my hero, you can’t miss this!”
Maybe it was because of Lillian, but Camila had always had a soft spot for sweet, earnest girls—and Helen was starting to remind her more and more of Lillian.
So, she gave in quickly. “Alright, you win!”
Helen let out a little cheer and darted off to the kitchen, rallying the house staff and chef to get the grill going.
That evening, as dusk settled in, the patio twinkled with string lights.
The Adams family went all out for Camila: top-notch steaks, fresh seafood flown in, and enough fine California wine to keep everyone merry. A few chefs manned the barbecue, expertly flipping burgers, ribs, and salmon. Staff bustled around with fruit platters and homemade pies.
Just before everyone sat down to eat, the doorbell rang.
Sophia Miller frowned slightly. “Who could that be?”
